distance casting from beaches on east coast - practicalities

#1 Post by uvox »

Looking at the reports from the last few months it doesn't seem like casting far is a requirement - most fish appear to be within 50 metres of the beach? Are there really cases where I might need to cast 100 metres plus?

TOTALLY dependant on venue......

One particular mark on east coast.....casts of 20 yds are too far......AND THAT'S A FACT.

do cod have different feeding patterns to other fish? as far as i can see the reason fish are in close would work for all species...

alot of the time when ray fishing here a bigger cast is better.

also even if you dont use it all the time, having the skill to cast a long way can sometimes mean the difference between a blank and a few fish.

20 TO 30 METRES ON EAST COAST IS GENERALLY ALL YOU NEED. I REMEMBER ONE SESSION I WAS HITTING THE 20 - 30 METRE MARK AND WAS BLANKING AND I SAW A SPLASH NO MORE THAN 3 METRE OUT SO I DROPPED IN DIDNT HAVE TO CAST JUST FLICKED IT AND OVER THE NEXT 1 AND 1/2 HOURS HAD 24 FISH AND EIGHT SPECIES , COD, COALIE ,WHITING SEATROUT, FLOUNDER, DAB, ROCKLING AND DOGGYS WITH COD AND COALIES TO 3LB'S ALL FROM A MARK HEAVILY FISHED ON EAST COAST:shock:   I WAS CASTING OVER THEM BEFORE THAT. IT WAS ONE OF MY BEST DAYS EVER. ILL ALWAYS TRY UNDER MY NOSE NOW SOMETIMES ITS WHERE THEY ARE. NEVER MADE ANY DIFFERENCE CASTING FURTHER TO ME AND I CAN HIT 120 METRES HANDY ENOUGH BUT I FIND YOU JUST HAVE TO REEL MORE LINE FOR THE SAME RESULT. :D :D :D

Being able to wang a long cast is always a plus...many times (even when fish are being caught close in) its worth a long cast just to see the result.

whats considered a long cast....? or above average for an angler. tournament casters no need to boast of launching a bare lead to the horizon but whats considered decent

150yds with bait is a good cast IMO..
Around Ireland in general you dont need to cast far compared to some other countrys where if you cant cast 150yds+ with bait you just dont catch.

you dont need to cast long distances to catch fish, my PB wrasse (5Ibs 12oz) was caught on portaferry peir just as the tide was starting to flood, literally just 2 yards off the in side of the peir

wrasse are generally caught close in at rocks so you wouldnt need to cast for them anyway, i get the vast majority of my wrasse at the rock face all sizes and species.

portaferry isnt a rock mark and isnt that deep, although on a big high water it mite be 35 feet.
