Greystones ,dec 5, 08

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:O sole mio

Duration: 3-30pm- 8pm

Tide:high at 4.40pm

Weather: cold northerly wind, rolling seas

Bait:lug,mack,squid

Rigs:2+3 hook flappers,pennell

Results:1 small pollock, 1 flounder, 7 whiting

Report: Went to my usual spot in greystones at the harbour rocks to use up some lug kindly donated by Fishface. The wind was hitting me side on so i got no shelter grom the rocks. Got a whiting early on and had a little duel with what turned out to be a small pollock on the small rod in close. I kept hitting the same spot at the base of the rocks and got bites straight away but couldnt hook up  . I lost one small 2 hook rig here, then downsized to a single size 4 hook and got hit straight away, and hooked him  . Amazing how a small pollock ,similar looking and in size to a whiting, gives such a totally different account of himself   .Quick pic and release. Got a double of whiting next, both small enough, 20 cms approx, on the lug. Tried a big lug, squid bait on a pennell rig but no joy  It was brass monkey weather and I thought of having my cup of hot coffee but decided to save it till later   . I changed direction with my cast and sent it towards the buoy/pot :?: :?: which is where i've got flatties before but as the sea was rolling away nicely i didnt hold out much hope  .I sat down for a mo and tried to warm up ( will i have that coffee now????????,,,,,,naw,,,wait another while  ), then i got a decent rattle and let it develop for a while. I reeled it in and was fairly confident there was a fish on but you couldnt be sure,,if there was it wasnt huge anyways. The strong wind was making it difficult to detect bites and even to hold the rod upright when reeling in. When i did get it in there was a fat flounder and 2 whiting on it   When i cast out again i decided that i deserved that cup of coffee now 8) . Opened the small flask, poured the boiling water into that delicate mixture of sugar and coffee that i like, gave it a stir and let it settle  . Smells lovely,,,can almost taste it   . Wheres my bar to go with it :?: Opened my bag to get the bar,,,,gust of wind,,,,,,,,you know whats coming next    ,, turned around to see my coffee mixing in with the seawater in the rockpool i was using to wash my hands in      . Ended up with a half frozen banana   . Some guys on the site get Bass, Bass and more Bass,,,,now Cod after Cod,,,,and all i get is whiting and a half frozen Banana. Got another small whiting before i came face to face with the biggest rat i've seen in a while, must be all the leftover bait, and that ,along with cold and hunger, finally broke me and I packed up and headed home. Not the best ever session, but better than dumping the bait. Next time i'm bringing a cat with me to take care of that pesky rat

Thanks Craig,,,It was one of those half black bananas,,,you know the ones that nobody else eats and mothers/wives want to get rid of   Schoolyard bins are full of them, you find them in your lunch box when you didnt ask for them,,you give them to kids at Halloween. I was so grateful i'll never turn my nose up at one again

Good on you for sticking out the cold weather - shame about the coffee.

I guess a black banana was better than eating a raw whiting.

I was out for a bit last night too - bit of a disaster - one coalfish and about 20 kelpfish - and one was at least 15 lb
The worst thing was the kelpfish would hit the bait just like a bass - first a gentle twitch on the line - followed by a strong tug - each time I was convinced I had a bass until I felt the dead weight.

That was the end of my bass roll
Cod season Winter 2013/14: 117 cod (best fish: 6.5 lbs)
