resesion session bhaile atha cliath

#1 Post by eric »

People:myself, rodger and dbrock

Duration:8-12

Tide:last two ours of the ebb and first two of the flood

Weather:no to bad

Bait:mussle, dog whelks and lug

Rigs: single hook flappers

Results:4 codling, no whities!!!

Report:decided to fish an old mark of mine close to home after hearing of a few cod where turning up off it, needless to say we where not disappointed. dodger and i got there with a cold northerly blowing in but was creating a nice rolling swell for the nodders, first cast for myself concluded with a missed bite which look identical to that of a whiting's. phew just escaped that close call!! it would be another hour and a half or so until we got the next rattle, this time a dare devil move (whole squid) from the dodger ended with a cracking bite unfortunately the culprit missed the hook and made of with the squid head!! papa B had arrived by this stage and despite having a s*** headlamp proceeded to offer us expert tuition, (get real nervous round these guys, their just so knowledgeable, one day il be like them  ) . anyway next cast i missed a bite, it was getting traumatic, the dodger missed another and then finally i got one after noticed my rod stand had fallen over and was vibrating like mad. nodder on managed to get him out of the kelp and a fine 46cm fish was landed, only to reveal a baby and still very much alive, well conditioned codling of about 15cm in his mouth  2 fish to me!! the dodger struck back with a 42cm and then towards the end i got another stonking bite only to pull to find the grip leads stuck, felt him going ape on the hook end but couldn't get the lead out until he made a break for it. redeemed myself on the following cast to land another fish around the 35cm mark. enough was enough it was getting chilly so we made for home.

no cod where harmed in the making of this report,

i think one thing to remember is if you want to catch cod their is no point using small hooks ,3/0 is the smallest with 4/0 and 5/0 ok ,also use huge baits if a codling is to get a chance at your bait you have to keep any whiting from hooking up or emptying you hook ,plenty of bait elastic helps too ,i used 3 lug and two mussel for most casts and still got empty hooks back most casts ,also fishing in or near rough ground will help, cod like it ruff
