Coloo head 30/01/05

#1 Post by bigcol »

Low tide 1pm.Fished from 10.30 am to 5 pm.
Bait:frozen and fresh lug,frozen and fresh razor,peeler crab,mackeral,mussel.
Fished the magical cooloo head with SeanP from the forum.I say magical because all the bloody fish had dissapeared!!!!!!!!! :( I blanked and Sean had 1 coalie about 3 lbs.We threw everything but the kitchen sink out to the fish but no interest.I have never reeled in so many perfectly untouched baits.Still, what a beautiful place to blank.A stunning location.

Yes.Valentia island it is.It is famous for winter cod or in my case the lack of cod.Kev.it is a long ledge about 40 feet up.You are fishing into about 50-70 feet of water. It is only about a 5-10 minute walk from the road and very easy to find.Similar to Kerry Head but feels and looks a whole lot safer.Only to be fished in calm conditions but the swell is nothing near as bad as Kerry Head.Mind you,you have fished Dunmore Head so you know what the scenery is like down here.Just a pity the fishing wasn't as good as Dunmore!

Thanks cono-flex.The words salt and wound spring to mind! What were the conditions like? Was it after a good blow?Hard back or peeler crab? What distance were you castin? What was the state of the tide?I want to give it a go again before march and any help to avoid another blank would be great.

coloo head

hi guys Sounds quite a place, and as I'm spending a week in Kerry later this year I wonder if somebody could give me directions to Coloo from the Portmagee/Valentia bridge - I've pored over various maps but I can't seem to track it down. Thanks

This should help, park car and follow the stream down to the 'Culoo Rock' sign, about 5mins walk from the end of the track,
