To much rain water in shore and that will keep the cod out they will come in to feed on crab and whiting and that is why so many whiting on all the beaches no cod feeding on them.
I do no not hold with one night frost to bring the cod in the water is very slow to change temp. i think that a cold spell is a dry spell with no rain and long dark nights and that is what brings them in shore to feed.
watch the long range weather forecast.
Waterford best for cod Feb and Mar. so all is not yet lost.

The water temperature this year is now at 11C along the South coast...almost 1.5C lower than this time last year. This time last year there were cod around. There hasn't been great boat catches of cod this summer which would seem more to indicate that they just aren't there. You can get years like this...almost famine like...but usually followed by feasts
