Killiney 26.11.08

#1 Post by Stephen8wood »

Where: Killiney
Who: Me
Time 4.15 pm to 7.15 pm
Tide: Out then rising
Bait: Rag, Mac, sandeel
Results: Nil

Took off early from work for the first time this century. Went to Killiney and set up in front of the tea rooms.

Fished the beachcaster at mid length with large rag on a two hook flapper. Fished the bass rod with sandeel and mac strip at similar distance.

Took a couple of early knocks at dusk but didn't set the hook in time. Continued to feed the fish, re-bait, cast, unsnag, lose rigs and weights, re-rig each rod twice and even mannaged to have a cup of coffee. But still no fish. This continued for three hours and resulted in a blank. My first in weeks. I have to say though that i didn't think about work or the collapse of the worlds financial system for the whole session and went home to tuck the kids into bed with a smile on my face.

Fshing is great and a fish would be a bonus.

Thanks, have fished right of the car park but am tired of murdering four inch whiting and apart from the stray doggies and one five bearded rockling i've had nothing else over the last few weeks. That could be more to do with my technique (or lack of one) rather than the mark of course.

Will try the muscle and lug option next.

Quick question then. If you had 2 or 3 hours on a winter evening, prefer beach fishing to pier fishing and scared of the rocks in the dark where would you go within 20 mins drive of Dun laoghaire pier and hope catch a decent fish of the non pin whiting variety?

Maybe this question is impossible to answer but I would appreciate advice as I'm only getting to grips with this.

Very hit and miss mark for me. I find its best to keep moving and definitely fish the 2 rods at different ranges with one in very close. Worth havin a look on a low spring tide to see the ly. Have a scope at MS virtual earth which has a very good birds eye view of the area. You can make out the boundary of the kelp beds. Obviously these will have changed over the time since the shots were taken but will give you a rough idea where the fish are. Plenty of reports on this spot anyway.

its not a hard place to fish and your usually guaranteed something, for dublin you've got such a variety of different types of marks in such a concentrated area, everything from a small shallow sandy beach (whiterock), steep shingle, reefs, rocky outcrops, streams etc
whiting are there all day and all night, during the day they can be out a bit, 150 yards+ at night anywhere you cast a bait. flounder are there too right under your feet on the ebb. if you get a blow fish it just out from the car park not too far out and this time of year youl get coalies 35+ codling of decent size and lots of small fish of various species. mussel will fish well for the coalies, the cod will take crab, and for all of them lug is a great all round bait. try to steer away from fish baits as it will bring the whities to the dancefloor.
