East Cork beach - 25th November 2008

Bait: Razor, mackerel, mussel

Rigs: 3/0 pennel pulley, 2 hook flapper

Results: Me: 1 bass; Nik: 1 bass; Petekd: 1 flounder




Report: I hadn't intended to go out but in the afternoon I got a PM from Pete to say that himself and a couple of the lads were heading to one of the East Cork beaches at 7.30 pm and I was welcome to join them. That was too early for me but I showed up at about 10.15 pm, just around low tide. The lads hadn't had much success up to then and I wasn't too hopeful of doing any better, particularly as I never had too much success on that beach apart from the odd coalfish and dogfish. But it was a good opportunity to meet a few anglers off the SAI site.

I got set up between Pete and Lee and cast out one rod with a 3/0 pennel baited with full razor and a second rod with a two hook flapper baited with mackerel and mussel. Talked with the lads for a while and the general consensus was that it wasn't going to be a good night. After a while Pete said he was going to pack up as he had an early start. As Pete was reeling in I noticed a twitch on my rod with the pennel rig, then a stronger jerk - I had a fish on - as I began to retrieve I could feel a fairly strong pull on the line, it definitely felt more like a bass than a dogfish, but I wasn't fully convinced until I hauled it onto the sand, and there was a 47 cm bass , just over 2.5 lb.

That was a relief, a bass within the first half hour, on the first cast - at least I wasn't going to embarrass myself in front of three experienced anglers.

About 3/4 hour later or so Nik got a bass - I dont have a measurement for it - but it looked around 40-42 cm.

That was it for the rest of the night. Nik had several missed bites as did I, something took a chunk out of the middle of my razor but wasn't hooked. After that I resorted to using half razors and changed the rig on the second rod to a 3/0 pennel as well. I was getting little nibbles but it was probably small whiting pulling on the bait.

So I was very happy with the night, great to meet the guys and get the first bass of the night too.

Glad nik got his fish, he would still be there otherwise.... I had a flounder before I left BTW.

Thats Ok, good to put a face to the name Frank. Didnt measure it, small enough, 26/27 I would say....

sounds like ye had a fun night,and a few fish to boot.Would love to have met up but unfortunately or should i say fortunately i was collecting a daiwa awb beachcaster what a rod nicer than anything else i've laid my hands on
Good to see that the bass are still knocking about and frank its a cracking beach when on song,it still produces real biggies but generally its kept off the radar with such reports.Lads there is no more hiding behind usernames now .Hope to catch up soon and pete dad sends his regards,i've nearly got him convinced to take his antique fishing tackle out for one more trip,watch this space!

yes, always nice to put a face to a name - good show by Frank, turning up and getting a bass first cast. Put me to shame anyway - I didn't get a discernible bite the whole session no matter where I put my baits. Nik appears to have this uncanny ability to attract fish to his bait, but not to be able to hook them, every trip out he has been getting bites, but missing most of them. Good few slack line bites last night, don't know what he is doing wrong?

Shame you couldn't make it - it turned out to be a good night. I wasn't expecting to catch much as I only got there at low tide so I was very happy to pull a bass out.

Know how you felt Rockhunter, it can be a bit nervewracking alright at times when out fishing with experienced guys (FISHFACE take note ), and it sure is a great relief to land a fish, any fish , to relieve the pressure . A big WELL DONE to you
