North wicklow beach 23-11-08

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:12pm-5-30pm

Tide:rising

Weather:dd windy, heavy showers, cold

Bait:rag,squid,mack
dd
Rigs:flappers

Results:2 dogs, 2 flounder,1 dab and 1 schoolie bass

Report:Went to a sheltered mark near brittas bay as it was gale force windy out. Had plenty of layers of clothing on this time as i learned my lesson in greystones on friday  . Set up the beach shelter which came in handy later when there were a few heavy showers. I was fishing with 2 rods at various distances trying to find a few fish. Very few bites all day, but i suppose it was hard to detect them with the wind. For the first couple of hours the baits were coming back untouched, and i could see the spectre of the dreaded blank approaching :? . With this in mind i lobbed a bait in close which resulted in a mid sized flounder, blank saved. Shortly after that i got a good knock on the rod which resulted in a doggie being landed, fighting all the way in. Another doggie followed soon after this and a further doggie beached himself near me. I threw him back in ,then saw a seal, oops  , sorry  , wonder if he was trying to escape the seal   :? . Next up was a decent sized flounder, 27cm, which also gave a good knock on the rod. As dusk approached i packed away the shelter and one of the rods. I had to pick up my daughter at 7pm so i couldnt stay too long into the dark, though this is usually the most productive time, i find. Another bend in the rod tip and i reeled in a good sized dab, 29 cms. Last but not least was a small schoolie bass which gave a great little scrap. All the fish took rag, tipped with squid or mack but the mack on its own was useless. I was reluctant to leave, cos i'm sure the fish were only starting to feed, but i'll return again another time, please God    .

Well done Dave, good fishing given the weather conditions. It was a cold day to be out.

That is a fine size of a dab.

Hi John, got the doggies during daylight, and there was about half an hour between putting one back and seeing one beside me on the beach, and he was much darker than the other two ,,, thought he was dead at first but he curled up when i lifted him :? :? :? :? Reading back through this report you'd think i was reeling in fish after fish, but in reality i was there for five and a half hours with long periods in between the 6 fish   ,,, not that i'm complaining, i'd be happy enough with 1 to save the blank.

Just a small one, but of the five i've caught this year, he was the only one to give the definite knock on the rod, followed by slack line,,,i just kept reeling in trying to feel the weight but i saw him close to the surface before i felt the weight. Nice little fellow to end the session off   .

Thanks for forgiving me  , i knew youd understand   . Wasnt too bad there yesterday, wind was flattening off the sea, some heavy showers. All fish caught on Neils' secret killer rigs,,, that special tip you gave me worked a treat, and those steps you taught me gave me an extra 30 yds in my casting but dont worry, i'll never reveal it to anyone   (that'll get them wondering    )
