east cork beach19nov08

#1 Post by beachbuddy »

People:myself

Duration:6 til 10

Tide:9ish

Weather:blustery nw but pleasant and MILD

Bait:lug mackeral razor
dd
Rigs:1/0 2 hook paternoster and 2 2 hook wishbone

Results:1 flounder,2 dogs and 22aprox whitting

Report:Had been hoping to go plugging but the water was too coloured so dug a few lug and hit the beach with the spin rod and bass rod as it was not bassy looking and i did'nt think the codling were about judging by the lack of reported fish down this way,so it was whitting bashing   .Things started slowly with just a small flounder before dark quickly followed by 2 doggieson the spin rod[with bait and 2oz lead],great fun.
Once the tide peaked the whitting started to feed very hard, the usual pins at the beginning but then as i tipped the lug with mackeral some big boys showed very close 2o to 30 yds.I ended up keeping 10 as afavour for aneighbour these fish measured in all around 40cm and i even got some clonkers upto 46cm which were huge in comparison to the usual 6cm pins.
All in all a nice night with some decent fishing and i would def recommend people to size down there gear and have a bit of fun with the current influx of whitting around some of the bites were mental if only my standard rods had the same huge fish look about them when they would get a bite.

Well done - 46 cm whiting    those sound like they are specimen size.
If there are whiting of that size about I must have a go at targeting them myself.

Hi Rockhunter,
yes it was a good trip for a change with some lovely whitting, hopefully they will stay about for a while longer, but still would give it all up for decent bass preferably 15lb or even a 10lb cod but im not fussy so these whitting will do just fine.
