Report:headed out tonite as we didnt get out at the weekend. gino drove his jeep onto the beach for a nice handy session. just thought i would put up what we caught as to let you know how the beach is fishing at the moment. all fish were in close id say about 40 yards. didnt do badly considering it was slack tide for a good while. still seems to be plenty of them small schoolies around this year. any amount of whiting too as usual. we fished to the left of were u go onto the beach. still no sign of any codling showing.

the sooner the better wicklow co.co. put barriers up on this beach the better in my opinion.
i cant see the logic in driving the 4x4 onto the beach its only a short hike to the waters edge.besides its against the bylaws to be driving on the beach im sure its down to pure lazyness .

john dont see what harm we are doing in driving on to hard enough sand , we are local too and have often had to pick rubbish off that beach by plenty of anglers up your direction and i know they are from your neck of the woods as the reg plates would suggest and who we have had the pleasure of speaking with. no we are not lazy and until barriers are put up we will drive on to the beach if we wish do so, also the fisheries board also dont seem to mind driving on to it with a 4x4 when out on their patrols. they are all about conservation are they not, so give me a good enough reason bar calling us lazy not to drive on to it when it is clear u can ( no barriers). and one more thing the council are the lazy one,s who cant even provide bins for rubbish let alone barriers. maybe all the dublin marks full of empty bottles and cans and stinking of piss. could do with your sort of views.

People should bring their own rubbish home with them, as most people probably do, sometimes bins are only magnets for attracting rubbish. Maybe thats the reasoning behind the lack of bins I work in the council myself, and have collected a fair amount of litter in my time (none of it my own ), and its not the councils that put the litter there, they only try to clean it up afterwards and listen to people moaning about how lazy they are Another thing, you dont have a monopoly on cleaning up your local marks, believe it or not some of us dublin lads clean up our local marks (even if they are in wicklow ).
ps driving on the beach in the 4x4 doesnt bother me unless its at speed heading in my direction

Ennereilly is a private beach. Wicklow Co Co have no say over it. The only ones their byelaws cover are:

* Brittas Bay North
* Brittas Bay South
* Greystones South Beach

Take your litter home with you.

I have to say 4 X 4's are not part of your fishing equipment. Carry your equipment to the beach like a man. If Amundsen can make it to the South Pole without a 4 X 4 you can make it from the car park to the water's edge. Same for those idiots who light fires at ennereilly. Stop it. Wear a jumper if you're cold. Of course, we know it's all about showing off the 4 X and they're embarassed to show their arses off when changing into waders, so they hide behind the X5.

Of course, if some anglers didn't insist on emulating the polar expeditions every time they went fishing - beach buddies, tents, huge tackle boxes, unassembled rods in tubes, portable heaters, tripods, sleeping bags...

For God's sake - I carry two assembled rods with sand spikes, a bag over my shoulder, that's it.

Ennereilly could be a very nice beach but it's always full of rubbish. I think that some of the rubbish is washed up the beach by the waves. One day I brought the kids down that beach and I was disgusted by the amount of plastic bottles, beer cans and other rubbish hanging on the beach.
I think that having waste bins near the entrance of the beach could help a bit but it's always up to the people to put the rubbish in there.

I'm surprised that not even in Kilcoole there is a bin near the car park to put some rubbish after a fishing session.

A few weeks ago I went fishing with Tom in north Greystones were the rocks are. We arrived at that spot and I nearly got sick from the smell of decomposing warms and other things left over by some anglers. We cleaned up the place before fishing as it was unbearable to stay there otherwise. We ended up collecting two plastic bags full of other peoples stinky rubbish and dumped them in the nearby waste bin. I thought that it was disgraceful as the bin was only 15 meters away from this spot.

i dont have a problem with any1 driving onto the beach 2 do a bit of fishing,
i think if some people were even sitting on top of a bin they would still throw there rubbish around and i dont think theyll ever change

It is true that the sea throws up a lot of stuff, particularly up by the river. However, it's clear that there is a select bunch of anglers - of all nationalities - who not only leave litter, but leave clear evidence it's anglers responsible, tarring the responsible folks with the same brush, in the eyes of the land-owners and other beach users.

i was fishing there last year with a landowner when some AH comes driving the length of the beach in his SUV. the driver was told he'd no permission to be driving there. the usual BS started about "rights". The cops were called. he was told if he did it again he'd be prosecuted for trespass. you're there at the behest of the owner, so don't push it.

Just on an aside I was of the opinion that there is no such thing as a private beach, you may have to cross private land to get to it but that's about it.
The 16 local authoraties on the coast are responsible for the coastline (all 5800km approx) of it in the Republic and the Irish State owns the foreshore which includes the strip of land and the beach and nobody owns below the mean high water mark.

what a load of b*****x people have nothing better to do with themsleves than to come on here and give out about stupid stuff. a local driving onto his local beach to do a spot of fishing, what harm has keitzer caused to the sand and the stones, go get better things do, and do feel free to stupid opinions to yourself.

depending on the type of beach and the dune structures serious erosion can be caused by vehicles driving onto a beach, equally regularly used paths by pedestrians do the same damage

it may seem like nothing - but once the grass is worn on a dune the sea or wind can move the sand pretty easily after that - once the erosion starts it can be catastrophic after that

the only thing protecting the foreshore on a lot of these beaches are the natural dunes - once these wear away the whole foreshore could be exposed

there are plenty of examples where the CO COs try to fence off areas or put down paths or boards in particularly vulnerable areas - but as ever there is very little resources to go round

if you genuinely like your beaches and fishing on them and want to act responsibly - you should not drive any vehicles on them or over them - whats a 2 minute walk!

I wouldnt drive the 4x4 through dunes but I have no problem whatsoever driving it onto a beach provided there is reasonable access. One of the reasons I got a 4x4 in the first place was the ability to take it onto a beach. I disagree that, with decent access onto a sandy/shingle beach and responsible driving that there is any damage caused or anything untoward about driving on a beach. How many of us learned to drive on them for instance? Yeah, sure, you could take the green route and walk and carry all your stuff the length of Ballybrannigan or some of the Garryvoe beaches for example but if you have the facility to safely drive onto them then why not? I fish a lot and on occasions, it makes life a hell of a lot more comfortable. Any of the lads I know that fish and own 4x4s certainly arent into posing or showing off, whats to show off about a scruffy 4x4 filled with tackle and stinky bait with an even scruffier smellier bloke behind the wheel...
