whats the best way of keeping snake whites i have them in 20's in cat litter traysin fridge with the water about 1 inch covering lost nearly a hundred last month and dont want the same to happen to these.ihad fresh sea water that was changed every couple of days seperating the damaged ones everything fine for nearly a fortnight then came home from work and the tongues were hanging out of every one and the water looked like ribena

it sounds like you have to much water in trays.

i would have just enough to keep them wet about 3mm would be enough and keep a check for damaged or dead and change water every day.
you will have to keep fresh sea water in the fridge to have it at same temp for changing.

i would keep rag for weeks the same way .

what size are the whites lt14?? if they are more than six inches long i would advise you to keep only 2 or 3 in a tub , the reasin for this is because when they are 6in"" or bigger they start to eat each other !! but like john1 said only put in enough water to cover them about 4mm !

when changing the water DO NOT handle them , as they will blister and break and when they do this they will kill every other white in the tub , when you first dig your whites change the water every day for about a week !! the reason for this is because they pass through all the sand and sh*t from there body ! and the water will get dirty . after they are cleaned out so to speak the water will last for longer because its not getting dirty , so you only need th change it once a week .and when changing the water use a sivv ! its much easier and you dont need to handle them .

thanks for the replys they are mostly large snakes up to about 12" the not handling tip seems to make sence as i have been handling them every couple of days thanks again

I put activated charcoal in the bottom of my trays,Its freely available at Aquatics shops and it neutralises most of the by-products that come from the worms. I have kept whites for 10 weeks using this method.
I have heard that Coal smashed up finely has a similar effect but can't vouch for it.

yes i think the guys in the north east of england keep them in coal dust with sea water in it about 3 or 4 in a tray stored in a fridge .change the sea water [not to much water] often and watch for any dead or damaged.

i have had whites for 11-12 months just like i described .

i just dig them the day before i need them. saves bother of changin water and all that sorta stuff. i will be diggin lug nyway.
