wicklow harbour ,not the light house one!, 5-11-08

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me and neil

Duration:4-9.30pm

Tide:high at 4'30 approx

Weather:dd lovely and mild, calm seas

Bait:mack ,rag and lug
dd
Rigs:2 and 3 hook flappers, mini rigs

Results:30 odd whiting , 1 dab, 1 rockling.

Report: Took advantage of the good weather and headed to wicklow harbour. 2 guys already there had nothing but crabs for the last few hours but i reckoned i was arriving at the right time and my first cast produced a nice whiting,25 cms. I noticed the lads were using large hooks and advised them to downsize their hooks (far be it for me to advise others   ) and he got a whiting on his next cast  . They were soon both catching whiting, probably as it was just starting to get dusk on the high tide ,,,,but i like to think that my advice helped 8)  . I set the small rod up and dropped it over the side of the pier a few yds out and started picking up small whiting. This was the pattern for the next few hours and i had well over 20 whiting when neil arrived at 6pm. He had a new rod, MTI something or other   ,,,which looked a serious piece of kit, powerful and light as a feather, strong butt section. Oddest moment of the night was when 2 swimmers ,in diving suits swam under our noses in the pitch black      ,, whats that about :? . The fishing died down for the last hour or so and i went to the end of the pier and cast into the channel towards the lighthouse pier which resulted in a small shore rockling, a welcome relief after all the whiting, the largest of which was about 30cms,with most about 25cms. My last cast gave me a double of a dab and a whiting and 1 called it a day (night :? ) at 9'30 with my stomach rumbling. A good night, good company and plenty of fish, what more could you ask for (except for the odd bass, cod maybe   )

Seems to be plenty of small ones around at the moment with the odd decent one thrown in, my neighbour fished greystones last night and had over 30 in a couple of hours also.
