GREYSTONES 16-10-08

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me and big mick

Duration:6-30pm-10pm

Tide:rising, low approx 6pm

Weather:dd bright moonlit night, mild

Bait: mack , squid
dd
Rigs:me 2 hook flappers and mini rigs, big mick   :? :? :?

Results: me, pouting, 3 whiting, big mick, coalfish ,3 whiting.

Report:last minute session so we couldnt get any worms. Had to rely on the old frozen mack and squid. Got to greystones at 6-30 pm, low tide , with a lot of rocks and rough ground exposed in front of our usual mark. We both fished with 2 rods and despite the low tide, we were getting nibbles most of the evening, the problem was connecting with them :? . 1 hour in and big micks rod was pulled off the stand, he grabbed it and landed a nice coalie of 40cms (must get a decent measure  ). He was delighted with it as it was his biggest fish to date from here, apart from doggies. I was trying for a wrasse or pollock in the rocks and landed a pouting, another new species for me, so that made my night. After that we got 3 whiting each ,all around the 30 cm mark, but not exactly fat :? As we only had mack fillets with 2 squid, we were happy enough, and i noticed that i got bites almost immediately after the bait landed in the water, but after the initial first bites they died off. It was almost as if the fish were tasting the mack and then leaving it. I had to keep rebaiting to get another bite.I lost a couple of rigs in the rocks, but that goes with the territory  A beautiful moonlit mild night to be out fishing.

Well done on another new species - you have been steadily adding to your species list.

Thats a fine coalfish alright.

If they didn't like the mackerel maybe you should have tried a bit of whiting? I don't know if that would make a good bait or not - but if there was a bigger fish lurking around and feeding on the whiting then it might have been worth a bash.

the cent was probably gone out of the mackeral thats why they were not biting it again. 15 - 20 minutes is long enough for any piece of mackeral before changing it. unless its a full mackeral you could give it a longer soak.

with whiting they can hammer the bait, lightly hook themselves and shake the hook off, within a minute.

Seen 2 lights across the cove from us. Probably yourself ;) Similar Sort of story for us at the steps. Whiting and pouting with countless bites without hookups despite varying hook sizes. Great night to be out though.
