Glenarm beach 11/10/08

#1 Post by JAMMYJOEY »

People: Me and Jonny

Duration: 17:00 to 22:10

Tide: High at 20:30

Weather:dd calm and clear

Bait: rag? mackeral and herring
dd
Rigs: 2/3 hook flappers and pennell

Results: Me 5 coalies, Jonny 1 dog and 1 coalie

Report: We haven't been out for a few weeks so were really looking forward to getting out on Sat. Ordered worms from Belfast Angling Centre early in the week and kept checking the forcast.

Got our worms and other bait and drove up the coast from Larne to check out a few marks before deciding where to fish.

We pulled into the car park at Glenarm beach and it looked fantastic. The sea was flat calm and there was little to no wind. Forgot to get milk so drove to Carnlough and got some supplies ( you cant fish without a cuppa! ).

Anyway, we got back to the carpark and pulled the gear out and set up. Opened the worms only to discover that they had turned to mush. These things must have been at least a week old and there wasn't one out of the two packs that was in a usable condition. At least we learn't a very valuable lesson, always check the worms in the shop!!! To be fair this is the first time that this has happened and we will be having a word with the guy's in the shop! But we were gutted when we saw their condition.

I put mackeral on both rods, whacked one out and dropped the other about 10 yards out.

We were sorting the gear out when i asked Jonny where the herring was. It turned out that he had thrown it in a bin in Carnlough with some other rubbish! Could the day get any worse?

I started to get bites on the rod with the bait 10 yards out. Couldn't believe this. Then it got hammered. Result a nice coalie. I ended up catching all of my coalies at this distance. It was great crack on a pike rod. I only had a couple of bites on the distance rod and never actually hooked anything.

Jonny got his coalie and dog close in too so seems you dont have to cast far at the moment.

All went quiet from aroung high water and we hardly had a touch after that so decided to pack up about 10.

We had seen fish and fry all over the place and i think i'll maybe take the fly rod with me next time. Those coalies would be great crack on the fly as we were getting fish up to about 30cm.

not too bad as your bait was pulp
better to dig your own as then you know what your getting and you can also get three different types of worms and shellfish for back up.
we passed glenarm on way up coast about 7 on our way to red bay and saw yous on the beach.
we had 15 fish , pollack [2lb] , cod up to [1.75lb] and dogs
rab
if it cant get its jaws round a 1/0 its not worth catching [ mullet excluded ]

I know i should dig my own but finding the time isn't always easy mate. Glad to hear you had a good night. There were loads of anglers out which was great to see.

if you are have no choice but to buy rag i would recommend you get it in larne tackle shop! tryed b.a.c once and would never go back. expensive and poor quality. 4quid a bag and always good nick down in larne. 1 bags more than enough for one person.

Did you read the post Dan? lol The rag was useless and the herring was in a bin in Carnlough so i'd have to say the best bait was mackeral lol

Sorry to hear about the rag fella, good to hear you good a decent result without needing it.
I use the BAC rag most of the time and often find it is the perfect size and havent had a problem with it, but I do check the quality before leaving the shop. I also know that the larne rag is top class aswell but its a bit too far for me to travel to collect it.

you should always check your rag when you are handed it in front of the shop owner ,never go wothout checking as its to late when you at the mark to discover your bait is crap!!!!
