South Down mullet,11-10-08

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

People:myself and Ronald

Duration:3hrs

Tide:low

Weather:ddmild,patchy cloud

Bait:bread
dd
Rigs:floats

Results:mullet

Report:We headed down for a crack at the mullet hoping there would be a few bigger fish still around. When we arrived there wasn`t much movement and the tide was still dropping,i tried for flatties and gobies while we waited for the tide to fill but with no luck.Ronald stuck it out trying to get one of the few fish that were hanging around infront of us but they didn`t seem to be feeding.
Once the tide had started to fill more mullet showed up,and in good numbers, infact there was alot more than we expected to see at this time of year.Ronald had a couple of nice fish moving 20 feet infront of him and one of them finally took his bread. After a scrappy fight it was in the net and weighed in at 4lb 6oz,not the specimen he was hoping for but still a nice fish.
I had a few take bread infront of me but couldn`t get a bite and after an hour or so msot of them had moved upstream so i decided to follow them before the light went.I waded out across the channel to reach all the fish that were moving up along the far bank. They were taking every piece of bread that hit the water so i didn`t wait very long for my first bite of the session but i missed it and two more bites after that. They were just nibbling at the bread but then i had a good solid take and my float shot under. This fish had a bit of weight to it so i headed back to shore so i could land it.I must`ve been standing on a bank cos the water was alot deeper when i headed to dry land,i`ll get ronald to post the photos :D
Once on dry land i was able to control the fish better and after a few decent runs ronald slipped the net under what we both knew was another specimen :D I didn`t think it would be much over 5lb but it weighed in at 5.85lb :D happy days specimen mullet number 7 for this year and also my biggest of the year :D
No more fish after that.I wonder could i get my 6lb`er before the seasons finished

cheers lads.i hope i do connect with a 6lb`er MC,i`ve seen alot of fish in the 7-8lb bracket lately but unless we get a spell of good weather i might have to wait until next year :(
i recon over 50% of the mullet have moved away and cos its dark at 7 i only get to fish on saturdays after work.i`ll maybe get another two good sessions in before its all over for the year
