West Cork Beach, 08/10/2008

#1 Post by thescotsman »

People: me, petekd, Nik (and a few other random lads)

Duration: 20:00-00:30

Tide: LW 18:46

Weather: mild, clear

Bait: leftover rag, mack, razor, crab

Rigs: single hook pulleys, three hook flappers

Results: me 2 flounder, Pete 2 flounder, Nik - nothing

Report: With some leftover rag from the weekend; I was itching to get out and use it, so headed for the old favourite with Pete, Nik joining us later. Bit calm for our liking, but thought it'd be handy enough for some flats.
Were going lug digging first, but poorly Pete was feeling a bit under the weather, so we opted to head straight down there.
Some other guys were down before us, which is unusual as we normally have the place to ourselves. They had nothing when we turned up.

Bit of messy stringy weed to start with which wasn't great. It cleared after about 45 minutes and as if by magic Pete got himself a small flounder. I rebaited and had a decent flounder (maybe touching 40cm - no measure) about 10/15 minutes later.

Bit quiet for a while longer; I got a smallie flounder as Nik turned up. Pete was steadily feeling worse so he decided to head home, turning up a flounder of around 35cm as he reeled in.

Nik turning up was a bad omen as the weed came back with a vengeance and we spent most of the time when he was there reeling in big stalks of kelp. He did manage one run off a fish, but lost it in the way in.
The lads over managed a couple of dogs and a flounder for their efforts.

Fishing at distance kept us out of the weed generally, but there were no fish to be seen out there, to razor, crab, rag or mack. In close seemed to be flounder when the weed was clear, taken to rag and mack.

The old leftover bait trick,, gets us out again during the week,, i like it. Why do we always have too much,,,,because we always need some leftover bait for the next time,,,, sure it would be a sin to waste it .  Well done on the flounders.
