South Galway Tope Expedition 07.10.08

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: stevecrow74 & myself

Duration: 12:30-15:30 & 18:30-01:30

Tide: Dropping for 1st session and rising for 2nd session

Weather: few showers otherwise fine little wind

Bait: Mackerel

Rigs: lures, one up one downs, one hook distance and animal rigs

Results: bass, sea trout, pollack & mackerel

Report: Had decided to give the tope another go, so met steve at Galway Docks to gather some mackerel spent a couple of hours catching mackerel on light gear using floats which was a bit of craic. We soon had enough bait with some nice joey's too. Headed back to the farm to pick up the rest of my gear then set off to chase the big un's. When we arrived the tide was just at the end of low so we decided to do some lure fishing. Steve was first in with a nice little sea trout his first of the year 8) nicely lip hooked didn't bother with a photo as we thought it best to unhook him in the water he swam away strongly. Not too long after i got hit thought i'd snagged the weed bank for a moment until i felt a big kick. With a nice bend in the rod and few rolls had us guessing until i got it in close saw a flash of silver which confirmed bass weighed in a 7lb's :D quick photo then released. We stopped the lure fishing as the light faded and tried for other species which produced a small pollack for myself. Then as the tide filled we cracked out the big guns  We waited in the hope the tope would show this time, unfortunately there was no runs on the tope gear. On a more positive note we where chatting to a local match angler steve knew who confirmed the reports last year of a 40lb tope being caught on a boat close by as it was himself who caught it, so they're definately out there  Will give the tope another go soon :)

It is not a matter of upper or lower class, but of being up a while and down a while...

Cheers lads was a nice surprise alright hopefully it wasn't a one off. It would be nice to see bass travelling that far into the bay. Will try again for the tope soon. Let me know how your getting on Denis

Steve we'll just have to get a 3rd independant scales preferably certified  to settle any disputes :) either way still my biggest bass to date so well happy

not really, I'm happy to have caught that sea trout, strangely enough though, its the third large bass that i have seen coming out of Galway bay. larger than any I've caught or seen caught on other parts of the country  (not saying there not there, just not when I'm around :? )

Now that I'm back this side of the Atlantic again, I'll just have to be there next time - my Salter Electro Samson should resolve any disputes

Nice bass Conor. Very nice...
