Questions about the east wind?
1.Can anyone shed any light on why we have poor fishing when there's an east wind?
2.Is the whole country affected in the same way, ie if you are on the west coast of the country the fishing is poor, but on the east coast of the country the fishing is good?
3.Does it matter if its S.E or N.E and does as the wind increases does its effect on fishing increase?

Re: Questions about the east wind?
Northerly seems to kill the fishing down in Courtmac stone dead too.
Having said that it may just be a convenient excuse?

“........if people from Leinster support Munster, it’s actually good as it has separated those who really want to support us from the fickle ones, which means the base is being built on a solid core of support. If it’s based on fly-by supporters, that’s not a good foundation – as they say, rats will always jump first from a sinking ship.” Denis Hickie, Disco Legend

Re: Questions about the east wind?
a bit of wind coming onto the shore is always good unless your fishing for ray or plaice. the wind will help create the waves which churn up the bottom and dislodge worms sandeels etc which in turn get the fish feeding. it also depends from which direction the wind is blowing if its coming down from the north then there is usually a drop in the temp which some fish are sensitive to and will move off shore. i live on the east cost and during the summer months the best fishing is always two or three days after a high tide when there has been a south easterly gale/breeze and the sea is nice and churned up.

one day at lenen a strong east wind was blowing, and a friend of mine, one of the locals. who has been fishing all his life said to me,
if an east wind is blowing, your burgerd!! your just wasteing your time. i fished all day and blanked, not even a bite. the next day the wind had changed and it was a fish on every cast!!

Re: Questions about the east wind?
So can we say east coast west wind bad, west coast east wind bad?
In my limited experience around the north west, an east wind kills the fishing stone dead, and my da and uncles, all of whom have been comercial fishermen at some stage in their lives would all say east wind, forget about it!

See the below links..
note the winds and the results...
IMO wind direction is irrelevant but check out out the tides on these dates...both are a few days before either full/new moon....in short tides are more important than winds, the bigger the better, and it only seems to be big tides leading up to the moon phase that produce not the equally big tides the few days after which can have very poor fishing..for ray anyway.

Re: Questions about the east wind?
Yeah but, talking with some grizzled oldtimers in my Salmon/Trout club, they also reckon that an East wind is no good for fishing. No tides 50 miles inland.....
Weird. But then again, fish are weird anyway.

Re: Questions about the east wind?
I tried a great Bass spot last night on a NEE wind. Dirty night and a high surf running... not a sniff.
Should have gone on the beer with Danny....

Re: Questions about the east wind?
Well its funny you mention that Danny, because your not the first to say that this week - however strangely enough I did not encounter one single bit of weed the whole night (well, 2hrs anyway
). There must have been a force 6 or 7 blowing.
I had several casts on both rods and not a bit of weed. I was at a recommended spot on the south coast, with 5ft rollers coming in. Lot of kelp on the beach but none in the water.... (bit like the fish!
).
Hopefully there'll be a few calm days to clear the affected spots so we can all get back into it.
