South Down mullet 26/27th sept `08

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

just a quick report on my first decent crack at the mullet in 3 weeks.

friday 26th,
had a half day so headed down the coast to see if there was much happening since the rain has stopped, finally
i spotted a few fish when i first arrived but i couldn`t reach them due to the onshore wind.this was the story for the few hours i was there.there was a few fish feeding but only for 10mins then they dissapeared :(
i tied up a 2 hook flapper and managed to save a blank with 3 sand gobies, using some mussels i found on the rocks.

sat 27th,
the wind was a better direction so i headed down to the same mark but when i arrived i couldn`t see any movement so i chucked out the 2 hook flapper again.loads of bites but no fish.
once the tide had started to fill the mullet showed up and they were feeding well.i didn`t have to long to wait for my first bite which resulted in my first mullet in 27 days :D
i knew straight away it was a good fish as it had plenty of weight to it and after a good scrap i slid the net under my 4th specimen mullet this year :D and the biggest at 5.45lb :D
missed two more bites before the light beat me and i had to head for home.
the 27 day wait for another mullet was worth it after that fish. :)

cheers lads.i was getting withdrawl symptoms so i was just happy to get a fish, another specimen was just a bonus :D i`ll hopefully get a few more sessions in before they move away for the winter.they are already starting to thin out a bit so i hope this good weather stays for another few weeks so i can hit my target of 30 mullet for the season.i`d have hit it already if it wasn`t for all that rain.4 weeks mullet fishing ruined cos its been too wet

Nice fish. What constitutes a 'specimen' mullet or a specimen any fish for that matter? I have seen a few big mullet in the water.

Are they any good for eating?

a specimen mullet is a fish of 5lb or more.i`ve never tried mullet to eat and i wouldn`t have the heart to kill one, mullet are slow growing and a fish of 5lb could be around 20 years old, they also only breed every other year.
check out irish-trophy-fish.com this has all the info you need on irish record and specimen fish

nice fish davy well done, tryed my hand a some mullet in cork this year that i saw skulking under a rib and landed my first ever, great fight. got him on bread freelined. do you fish for them with flappers never heard of that method for mullet thought it was generally float fishing for them. i must give em another bash as the liffey is full of them plenty of specimens too judging by the size of them. there are some cork lads i know who swear by mackerel skin for bait when targeting them.
SPECIES 2010 (16)
COD..POLLOCK..LING..POUTING..COALIE..POOR COD..WHITING..GREY GURNARD..DAB..FLOUNDER..SMOOTHHOUND..DOGFISH

Thanks Davy. They are awesome to watch just gliding around. Most people seem to walk past on harbour walls etc oblivious to their presence.

i`ve never tried a flapper rig or any sort of ledgering rig but i think it does work in some situations.the only way i`ve fish for them is fly rod or float rod with float set up,sometimes using sunken bread if they`re feeding on the bottom or just below the surface.
mullet will happily take a piece of fish bait, especially in harbours where fish carcasses are dumped overboard from trawlers of angling boats.
well done on your first mullet, watch out cos they`re very addictive
