Wexford 25-09-08

#1 Post by Danny M. »

People:Myself and Carpets

Duration:7pm- 11pm

Tide:falling

Weather: Dead calm and warm
l
Bait: Live Crab, Frozen Squid & Mack

Rigs:3/0 4/0 Pennel Pulleys

Results: Myself Lots of Huss and LSDs
Carpets Lots of Huss and LSDs

Report: Went in search of early Cod last night, ended up being surprised with a steady flow of Huss at first , then the LSDs .

My first two cast resulted in 2 Huss, nice scrap out of them. Third cast I lashed out a juicy crab as far as I could at low tide. What ensued was draining on the body………….

Got a strange pull on the rod, picked it up felt heavy movement and struck, rod bent double as the fish showed it was not asleep ! Reeled down and pump and reel in between the heavy lunges on the other end. Got about 50 yards on the fish, the fish then had other ideas and jerked me forward with a fair bit of force ! I let the drag off a bit and the fish took line not at a fast rate but slow and steady, I had enough of this so I tried to turn the fish but it was having none of it, this went on for a while.
I ended up kneeling on the sand with the rod through the apex of my arm trying to put pressure on the fish…..carpets beside my laughing at me!! QUOTE: ‘ha your tip tornado looks like the letter T…give him a bit more stick sure lol….’
Carpets then took over to give me a break, the drag on the Turbo was locked 100% and this monster was still taken line slow and steady !!!!
I took the rod back and applied a bit more stick to the fish, but it had no intention of coming in, after about 20mins the mainline gave ……fish lost

We reckon it was a big Ray…but we will never know.

So I turned and put the rod in the stand and noticed something was hopping off my squid and mackerel bait on my second rod, so I picked up the rod and struck …fish on, about 10 turns of the handle the reel flew out of the coasters….. it was hilarious; I had the rod in my left hand with a fish head banging away and the reel in my right hand…we were in tears laughing.. it was just one of those nights. We managed to get the reel back on but the fish was gone.

Carpets can fill you in on his bit.
Quite an entertaining night all the same !!

Only 2 pics came out clear,,,could be somthing to do with the piece of crab on the lens :? .

Sounds like an eventful night. Judging by the amount of stick you were giving the fish you lost it would have had to be a very big ray. Better luck next time.
