whiting fish strips.

#1 Post by weaverboy »

thought this may prove popular, whiting strips freshly caught will
catch other whitng, and other species, dogs, coalies, pollack, gurnard,
to list a few, save on using up youre more premium baits.

well steve, i was fishing on a beach near courtown. i had 40+ dogs and low on bait. a whiting turned up so i decided to put him on a pennel rig and blasted it out, bout 10 mins later i hooked up with a 15.5lb huss! it works!

certainly works, have caught several bass in the exact same way,
small whiting freshly caught, hooked onto a pennel and cast out.

That reminds me .....

I've seen rigs where there is a small hook eg 4 tied right above a larger 2/0 to 6/0 single.
The small hook is baited to attract whiting, and when one is hooked, it is then left out there to attract large fish hunting the whiting. The idea being that if the small hook is in a 4 - 6" fishes mouth, the large single will lie alongside it, just right for hooking a predator.
I think it was mainly intended for cod.
I never tried it yet myself but was always interested if it works. Has anybody experience using this rig?

Any Whitingthat i catch that are a bit worse for wear and not able to go back in the tide will always be used for bait. I have had plenty of dogs on them.

Hi,

You can use them in strips, fillet or whole depending the size... It's a good bait, easy to get as one on two of these little hungry fishes won't be able to be released...
2010: starry smoothound, common smoothound, bass, flounder, dogfish, scorpion fish, tub gunard, tope, thornback ray, bull huss, coalfish, pollack, mackerel, turbot, whiting...

2011: flounder, dab, 5 bearded rockling, whiting, dogfish, codling, starry smoothound, common smoothound, bass, bull huss ...

2012: dogfish, codling, starry smoothound (PB), bass, common smoothound (PB)...
