East Cork rock mark - 17th September 2008

#1 Post by RockHunter »

People: Me

Duration: 6.30 - 8.30 pm

Tide: HW at 7.30 pm

Weather: Calm, warm sunny evening

Bait: Rag, mackerel
dd
Rigs: Two hook paternosters (size 1/0 and 3/0), various lures

Results: 1 coalfish, 1 mackerel, 4 pollock

Report: As it was a lovely sunny evening I decided to head out to a rock mark I haven't fished for a couple of months. I had some rag left over from the weekend and it was in good condition (kept in a cooler box with freezer blocks).

I set up two rods baited wih rag and tipped with mack. Cast one out to distance the other at moderate distance and did some lure fishing with a third. Not long after setting up I got a bite on the distance rod - a coalfish, 34 cm and about 1.5 lb. My first coalie since March or April. I forgot to bring my camera again   so took a poor quality photo with my phone

I then got a small juvenile pollock on a lure. There were a bunch of other small guys snapping at the lure but it was too big for their mouths I could see them chasing after the lures as the water was crystal clear.

I then noticed some surface activity the other side of the mark - cast a lure out and got a mackerel. I have had enough mackerel from last Sunday so I managed to shake him off the hook. My next door neighbour would have probably appreciated a few but I didn't want the trouble of cleaning them out.

Then close by I saw a medium size pollock darting up to close to the surface so I cast out to where I saw him. I could feel fish hitting the lure but no hook ups, so I changed lures several times until I found one that was more successful - a silver toby. I got a pollock of about 1.5 lb, followed by another of 1 lb. Then a third smaller one. The light was beginning to go at that stage so I packed up.

I had a couple of other bites on the bait rods but nothing hooked. Something was eating the bait but there no indication of even the slightest quiver on the rod tips - maybe crabs?

Its great when you change lures and get a bite. I got a new spinning rod there last week but unfortunately she is still a virgin

I caught a small whiting on Sunday from a rock mark near Killiney, about 15cm in size. Hooked on to feathers I had out still trying to hit macks. I have fished on average of twice a week all summer and my mack count is 6!!!!!!! I had to buy two yesterday to tip rag for a spot of fishing in Skerries. I had no luck at all there by the way. A local angler told me of a better spot so I moved to it but still no luck.

I had a good tip of though when I was in the tackle shop yesterday from another lad there of a Wicklow mark that is starting to fish well, including small whiting showing up.

Will try it Sunday all going well.
