Fishing Lough Foyle

#1 Post by JRHartley »

Hi guys, newbie here..

Just started fishing again after a long time out. I just have a question regarding fishing Lough Foyle Derry. [tried to e-mail the Lough agency but the website isn't working]

Basically I am looking to do a bit of sea fishing in Lough foyle .. std beach/shore tackle ... and I am a bit puzzled as to what my licence requirements are. According to the what I've seen on the Lough agancy site sea fishing in NI doesn't require a licence but I'm not sure how this applies to the Lough.

The easiest bit of the Lough for me to access [easy walking distance]
is where Donnybrewer road ends near the railway bridge at the entrance to the river Faughan. opposite DuPont.
[Please see map below.] I can get access from where I have marked 'A' and was hoping to fish the shore from this point A heading Easterly towards point B maybe even further towards the airport direction as far as possible really.

Can anyone give me any guidance as to if/what type licence I would need?

thanks for any help guys

as far as i know you dont need a licence to fish salt water, this includes
about 100m up in to a river where it meets the sea, its something to do
with the salt content of the water, but dont quote me, its just that i fish
on the antrim coast where a river meets the sea and have been told that
its ok to fish the end of the river by some of the lads up there who fish
the river.
some times catching crabs is a good thing.........or is it...........?

if you wish to catch sea trout you will need a game licence, the area by the river Faughan i am unsure about, but the section by the trout fishery at the bottom of the donneybrewer road is good for flatties and the odd mullet but has a lot of crab activity, there has been club competitions here in the past.

as mc said if you want to fish for sea trout a game ( foyle licence ) is required, also a foyle permit. in the past the fishery board never reaily botherd anyone to much about the permit, but this year they have being enforceing it.
give toms tackle shop in the waterside a ring and he will be able to tell you anything you need to know......

Thanks guys, I'll pop into Toms next time I'm going past.

I won't bother with the trout as I don't like the taste of 'em , much to the annoyance of my brother-in-law who caught a 7lb trout from the fishery last year and I told him to chuck it back in favour of something more edible :D

I'm going for flatties or anything similarly stupid enough to let me catch it. :D

if your fishing for flounder and such you will not require a licence/permit
