dark/black vertical bands - id

friend was diving - saw 2 fish hanging out with a bunch of pollack

had dark/black vertical bands on their sides and had a barbel under their chin - same size and shape otherwise as pollack

any ideas at all :?:

I would imagine pouting. Mature fish have the banding you speak of. You will see it on many when just caught.
