Clones Beach, Wexford 15/06

#1 Post by alby »

People:Myseld, the man who worships the male chicken, & Boycie

Duration:18:30 - 24:00

Tide: ????

Weather:mild, very calm

Bait:crab & lug

Rigs:pulley pennels

Results:6 hounds (same amount dropped & lost), loads of dogs, dabs, flounder

Report:
One of those last minute sessions, I was housebound all day Saturday and Discovery channel had a Henry Gilbey marathon on, I was going stir crazy by about 3 so I rang the one who adores male chickens, he was keen to head out yesterday so a plan was hatched. We both had a few frozen crab and Dennis gave us some crab he had going spare. Into the mix boycie had a couple of dozen so we headed for Clones.

Lovely night, had fish straight away, Paul on his first cast had his very first smoothie, a starry of about 4lb, and the next hour or so was fairly frantic. Packs of hounds running through would see all three of us getting runs at pretty much the same time, great fishing and comical to watch rods flying over tripods to beat the band. It was like a domino effect as the fish ran left to right, Paul, then me 30 seconds later and then boycie another 30 seconds later, and a few minutes later it would be reversed as the pack returned with boycie, myself & paul getting a run.

My first fish was evidently a good one as I had to reel a good 30 yards of slack before hitting it, then all hell broke loose, long runs left to right along the beach, the rod buckling over as the fish stayed deep before Paul went in to tail her. Put her in the sling and the scales pinged round to 8.5 lbs, less .5lb for the sling and I had an 8lb specimen, delighted!!!

Next cast myself and paul had a 4 & 5lb fish respectively and Boycie was beginning to loose the rag. Went quiet for a while though but not to be outdone Boycie had a 6lb & specimen 7.25lb (didn't get this on my camera as flash didn’t work, he'll post it later) into darkness.

Loads of dogs around too kept us busy all night aswell as the hounds, The open next week, providing the weather stays reasonably calm, could produce some exceptional fishing.
