Youghal - 27th April

#1 Post by RockHunter »

People: Me

Duration: 2.00 - 5.00 pm

Tide: LW at 4.40 pm

Weather: Light southwesterly wind, dry at first, then rain

Bait: Peeler crab

Rigs: 2/0 two hook flappers

Results: 6 flounder

Report: Fished Youghal Pier again on Sunday afternoon. Last Sunday I got 7 flounder on the rising tide from the pier but I was not too hopeful of getting anything this time as it was at the end of the ebb.

I set both rods up with 2/0 flappers baited with fresh peeler - (thanks again Hugh). After about half an hour there was a strong knock on one of the rods. There was a good pull on the line so it felt like a reasonable size fish. As I retieved the line in close to the pier I could see two good size flounder. Since the tide was quite low at that stage it took a bit of effort to haul them up the pier wall.

The largest was 43 cm and weighted 2lb, and second was 34 cm and approx. 1 lb. Before I could unhook them the second rod started bouncing - another flounder - 38 cm and weighing 1 lb 5 oz.

It got quite for a while after that, then at about 3.30 pm I got another knock on the first rod - another flounder double but both small, 29 cm and 23 cm.

Shortly afterwards there was another bite - again a flounder. This was bigger, 34 cm and weighing 1 lb.

There were no more bites after that and it was now low tide. I would have liked to have stayed for a few hours more into the flood as I am sure there would have been more flounder to be had but I had to collect somebody at 5.00 pm

I may not get out again before the end of the month - but April was certainly a good month for me after the lean months over the winter:

Good fishing, I haven't hit the shore in what seems like an age.

Might head down for a few flounder this week as the tides are good.

Thanks guys,
I wasn't really expecting much at all given the tide - for personal reasons 2-5 pm was the only time I could fish.

Yes Dave it was a good month. If I remember correctly you had a good month yourself - people had been telling me that the fishing would improve in April. It made up for a total blank in Jaunary (although only got out a few times) and catching almost nothing other than coalfish in March.
