New to shore angling - Rosslare, St. Helens, Ballytrent

Hi,

I used to fish off Rosslare Harbour pier in my younger days, 20 odd years ago. Pier rod, mackerel feathers, the usual. Work dragged me away from here for a number of years but I back now, and I am looking to start back fishing, but shore fishing this time.

I picked up a Penn Affinity Surf 13'6 FS, a Shimano Biomaster 8000XSA and all the other bits and bobs I think I need to get started from Gerrys online shop.

Anybody here fished Rosslare, Rosslare Harbour beach, St. Helens, Ballytrent etc...?. I have some Gemini Pennel pulley rigs, just wondering will they work ok in these marks. I will probably dig some lug in St. Helens as bait, and get some mackerel also. Will that work well here?. What fish will you find around these marks?.

Any advice to this newbie to shore fishing will be appreciated.

As for bait, mack and lug should be fine. See if you can get peeler and rag also and some razor as well.

st helens is a good bet for bass in the summer try to get some peeler crab and try rag worms too, we had some nice fish last summer down that way. bring a spinning rod too and fish a rising tide. all the best.

Thanks lads :). I will have a hunt around for live bait sellers and see can I pick up some peelers and rags. One last thing I am missing is a rod rest/tripod. Any recommendations on a good tripod and how much they cost approximately?. One or two fishing shops in Wexford town, will take a look in there tomorrow for one.

You should start with 2 hook or 3 hook flapper rigs. These rigs can be made easily with some parts from Ebay.

As a General rule if you are just searching for anything stick to size 2 or 1 hooks. Size 2 will catch you a few smaller, but will also catch you the bigger boys if they are around. Size 1 can be handy for avoiding some of the really small flat fish.

5oz grip leads should be fine, but have a 6oz handy, just in case you get a bit of a tide pull.

I got my leads from Gerrys, but here is a clearer picture of I found of them. They are 150g, or 5oz in old money. Are these ok for clean beaches, no seaweed to snag the grips?.

I will look at getting some flapper rigs. Will start experimenting with building my own rigs fairly soon.

hi andy,keep your pulley rigs for another month or so for the hounds
you are sittin on one of the top marks for them
lug,rag,mac ,sandeel ,dogs will start to show shortly
dabs,rockling,flounder and a good chance of good bass
dont look for distance all the time a flapper rig size 4or 2 hooks
20 to 30 yards with 3 or 4 oz rolling lead will produce fish
good luck on fishing hope this might help a bit

The Lead will be fine Andy. Just a word of note. Don't bother buying your leads online. The postage will end up costing you a fortune. Buy some of your tackle in your local store. These guys can also be very helpful for the information you are looking for when you start up.
Just get out there and give it a lash. Also, when one of the lads from your area are going out, I'm sure you'll get a PM and try to get you started. I know I will. Keep asking questions and if you are thinking of trying a venue ask some questions here before you go, and I'm sure the lads will put you right. Most importand of all, just get out there and enjoy yourslef.

As pete said, keep those pulleys for about a month, then use peeler for the smooth hounds. Try the "cannons" at the strand , or go up to rosslare point (fish just beside where the water comes back around the rock barrier about 100 yards to the right of the tip of the point) ,
Tope is another option.

I'd say Des O'Neill (Hayes Cycles on the main street ) is probably the most convenient for bait if you are coming from Rosslare to Wexford

Go for one of the Ian Golds (super match is the one I have) - you wont go wrong - great tripod :D :D :D

think I paid around €75 for mine - (was probably ripped off :roll: )

Cheers lads for all the info, I hope to meet a few of you on the local beaches over the coming months. I live only two minutes walk to Rosslare Harbour beach, and I'm online most days with my work, and I work from home :D. Feel free to send me a PM if any of you will be fishing this area. It would be good to meet up. Still got a few bits and bobs to get from a local fishing store, tripod, flapper rigs etc.., should be sorted this week.
