East Cork Beach 1st April 2008

Duration: 11.00 pm to 3.15 am

Tide: HW at 3.10 am

Weather: Very mild, light westerly breeze, clear skys, dry

Bait: Peeler crab, mussel, squid, mackerel

Rigs: Two hook flappers (size 3/0 and 2) , 4/0 pennel pulley

Results: 1 coalfish

Report: I had not intended to go fishing on Tuesday night, but when I watched the weather forecast after the 9.00 pm news and saw that northerly winds were again forecast for the weekend, I decided that since the weekend fishing was likely to be crap again I had better get out and do a bit of fishing. I had a few peelers left over from last weekend so it was a chance to use them up.

I headed to one of the larger beaches that I have fished about 3 times since December - although each time I caught just one coalie.

There was a moderate surf rolling in, but probably not enough to get the bass feeding. I walked to the furthest end of the beach this time, previously I fished it about mid-way, and two thirds of the way down from the car park.

Yet again I caught just one coalfish - on the flood at about 1.45 am. Hooked with the pennel pulley rig baited with crab. The fish managed to hook himself on the smaller hook at the wrong end of the pennel. It was 33 cm long and weighed just under 1 lb.

There were a couple of possible bites after that but nothing was hooked.

But at least I didn't blank - thank god for coalfish!!!!

don't think there is anything beside coal fish been caught at the moment around cork.
give it another few weeks id say when some of the summer fish come in hopefully.
this year the fish i am trying to target are ray hope to get my hook in to a few types ray this years.

Fished over East Cork way on Monday night with Pete McGroary and Scotsman. I had a coalie on one mark, we moved to another and all that yielded was a shore rockling. Other 2 lads blanked. Not a good sign, hopefully things will pick up shortly.

I fished a east cork beach on Monday nite and had a 36cm silvery fellow :wink: :lol:

I agree. I haven't been out myself much lately, but based on my own (limited) experience and talking to several angling buddies, coalies are king at the moment and bass are scarce. I think sea temp is a lot to do with it. Based on last year we are a degree or two off where we need to be. I use the following link to monitor sea temp progress...

Yes, you can always catch the odd bass, but 12 degrees C onshore seems to be when the bass season really kicks in.
