Cod Season - how was it for you ?

#1 Post by ifitswims »

folks,

hopefully there will still be some cod about for a couple of more weeks ..

but was it a good season ? were there many decent fish caught ?

i didn't get out much but when i did i found it to be less successful that last year. i know there were a few decent fish at youghal, one 9lbs and a few 4 to 5 lbs.

i dont want venues etc but were there many decent fish caught .. not just by forum members but any verified catches ??

thanks ..

I actually gave it a decent bash this year on the east Coast and to be honest I found it hit and miss... but more a miss. No decent numbers of fish and very few that were a decent size. Best for the year on the east coast was 46cm or 48 can't remember exactly and came from South beach Arklow,

noting over 2Lbs mark for myself around cork
didn't get out a whole lot between October and January.
and fishing was very poor between January and present
stocks are becoming depleated or maybe our waters are just getting warmer

Cod fishing around Cork I found decent enough on the beaches but the estuaries were pretty poor. Started picking up codling in early september on a West Cork mark and had some nice fish over East Cork way as the season progressed to 6lbs or so. Conditions had to be right for them on the beaches however.

Wasn't easy, but did ok, The right, conditions, coupled with the right tides & best of bait did the business, had a few excellent days.

Didn't bother winging it at all just planned sessions from my tide tables, seemed to do the trick

not too bad had codling up to 3 half lbs 6 or 7 a session

in saying that had many a night with none.
east coast very poor this year.
best results the river in waterford, cheekpoint
2009 species= whiting,flounder,dab,codling,bass,dogs,rockling,smooth hound,

kilmuckridge s.a.c.
