wicklow pier , the lighthouse one, 27/02/08

#1 Post by keitzer30 »

People:me and ginoceltic

Duration:6.30 till 9.00pm.

Tide:it was ebbing at 9pm

Weather:mild and calm

Bait:lug, squid, mackeral

Rigs:3 hook flappers

Results:me- 5 coalies ,1 dogfish, 5 whiting, 2 brown crabs. gino- 4 coalies, 1 codling, 5 whiting.

Report:we headed down to the pier with it being a nice evening, mainly to use up the bait we had left from the weekend. its nice and local for a midweek session. first cast and the coalies came thick and fast, they were all around the 27 to 35cm mark it was good crack. had a double shot of them to on one cast. gino had a codling about 28cm mark which isnt bad for this mark. a few of the lads we know were down the back end trying for conger. first session on the pier this year we dont fish it that often but the coalies are good crack. there were shoals out about 40 yards. here are some pictures check out ginos one with the hole in it. holy coalie how the f**k did that happen.

I was fishing from a mark in Wicklow before and the same think happend my brother in law. Caught 3 pollock on feathers and one was brought in with an identical chunk missing from it. It was bleeding and happend on the retrieve. We put it down to a conger having a go as half way in the rod went mental for a few seconds before returning to normal.

the wound was old and probably happened when it was a smaller fish. it looks like something had a go at it when it was younger, what we will never know. i reckon it was either a conger or more probably a seagull . i think a seagull because if the fish were feeding on fry or sprats a gull could easily have swooped down and hit him instead of the fry or sprats. a gulls beak is very sharp and hook like at the end . it would easily take a chunk out of any fish, thats what i reckon happened any one else any opinions. :)

Nialler,
The further down the back of the pier you go the rougher the ground.
The front is fine, and the corners too . .just dont go too far down and you'll be grand.

nialler when we say the back thats were you walk out to the end and around the lighthouse, then were you walk back in towards land this is all a step section. you are best fishing in front of the lighthouse itself casting out towards the sea,. the harbour side is not that productive. set your rod up on the right hand corner at the end of the pier. there is a white bollard around there put your tilly lamp on that.

species for 2009 (42)
species for 2010 (27)
species for 2011 (12)
species for 2012 (8)
best advice for catching species is girls dont like fishing and its hard to catch fish when you sell all your gear'
