west cork rock mark 17th feb 2007
People:me
Duration:1030-1700
Tide:hw @ 1345
Weather hazy sunshine, cold eastely wind but quite warm in the shelter
Bait:fresh mack and frozen jumbo sandeel's
Rigs:pulleys
Results:4 huss to 10lb 12oz and 2 dogs
Report:
after the dissapointment of no huss last week with the petes i had an itch to get back out after them and try and salvage some bit of pride. the easterly wind had bme worried as i dont really like fishing in it..really i needent have worried as it certainly didnt have an effect on the fishing, all bar 2 casts resulted in bites, landing 4 huss and 2 dogs. i also missed 2 /3 other definate huss bits..
also had about 7/8 unusual bites. these were generally where the rod would give one or 2 little taps before slowly pulling over and staying in a good bend. if i left it for a few seconds it invariable was stuck in the bottom. i tried leaving it for longer and still the same result, lost rig...i did strike it as the fish moved away and was briefly in contact with it but the hooks then slipped..quite frustrating, especially when you dont know what it was...still we'l be back to to find out soon. my guess is small strap congers..

ya they tend to be alot darker, i guess due to the kelp. think the pic exaggerates their colour a little, they were more of a dark brown. have a few marks where they almost charcoal black..
ya its typical alrite pete, but i guess thats fishing. this was a slightly different mark though, think you'd have enjoyed it a bit more, not as snaggy as lasts weeks one,..

cheers ronald.the above mark was approximately 40 feet, anything over about 20 feet seems to hold them down here

paul, i prefer mixed to rough with kelp beds present if possible, i also like a nice tidal run, i.e at the pont of a headland etc..no real scientific reason other than the fact that all my best fishing has come from this type of terrain..i dont target them on sand for the fact that i tend to get plagued with dogs..

Neil thats just typical, a week later and you manage four   The wind was in the same direction(easterly flavour) so what do you think made the difference on the day?
Pete there was no point trying to rise Sean that morning, he was up to his elbows in the 'compost heap' or at least the thoughts of her

honestly i cant put my finger on it, but it was a slightly different mark, remember the point to the east of where we were, thats where i tried but still i dont think it would have made that much of a difference, theres huss all along that stretch. other point was that i was fishing over high water rather than low and i'm always more confident over high...
definately worth another go when your down again...

supervalues finest pete, but there was about 10-15 gannets diving around 3/4 of a mile from where i was fishing, reminded me of them feeding on macks in the summer, although probably only herring or some other small baitfish.
