A simple tale of woe........
Last night I went down to Kilmore Quay, Shiny new Kompressor S, fixed Mag Elite (The winder sheared off on its first outing last Saturday - Thanks Des - excellent service), pre made crab baits all ready. Climbed out onto the rocks, baited up, five minutes later a good 45cm coalfish - woo hoo good nights fishing ahead - I thought. Turned around to bait up -My Ziplock bag was floating where it had fallen from my pocket.

hate that - happens to us all - spent 2 and half hours making rigs and then went out fishing - had my first cast and then a gust of wind caught the plastic pack i had the rigs in and threw them into the sea on me!
its great craic this fishing lark - at least you got a decent fish!

hi john,
does this mean the 525 is not suitable for beachcasting over light ground? i'm trying to figure out which multiplier to get - it will be my first. i'm looking to get an all rounder (if that's possible), to learn to cast distance on a beach and to use over rough ground. from what i heard already the 6500 mag elite sounded like a good bet but maybe not :?

- sorry for asking something that might be obvious  but how is a reel like the 6500 likely to get damaged when rock fishing and a 525 isn't? do you mean that getting tackle caught on rocks and excessive wrenching of reel will damage it that way? or the chance of dropping the reel on the rocks and it smashing? is the build quality better on the Penn? cheers for any help on this one.

Having had both twice.....
The Abu 6500 I had the levelwind version of. Yeah it worked well, very little in the way of birds nests but the level wind took so much distance out of the cast. The reel is also well made but designed for sand and the like.
Now the Penn does not have level wind and is far more robust, chunkier and with more leverage on the winder. This gives you more distance (if you need it), more possibilities of birds nests (although the braking is excellent to be fair) and the ability to pull the titanic up from the bottom.
Horses for courses :) - decide what kind of fishing you will be doing and finally end up with a few reels anyway :)

thanks for the advice guys!
i'm starting to think seriously now about the penn as i do enjoy fishing off the rocks along the coast near where i live.
conor, i looked at the slosh but think it will be a little overkill when i want to fish the beach and not so easy to reach a fair distance with.
the penn sounds more like what i'm after - for the moment i don't have the budget to start up a collection, so one will have to cover all bases. i've been looking on ebay and there's second hand penns going for around 90 euro. next thing is to think of a rod to match it with...
so far haven't found any negative experience of this reel except other members here mention of NeilusG having problems, but i couldn't find the post itself. could anyone give me the gist of it?
cheers lads.
