Youghal Dock, Co. Cork 9/02/08

#1 Post by RockHunter »

People: Me

Duration: 3.45 - 8. 15 pm

Tide: HW at 7 pm

Weather: Calm, very mild, dry

Bait: Crab. lugworm, squid, mackerel, razorfish, mussel

Rigs: 2 hook flapper (3/0), 1 hook flapper (3/0), 2 hook paternoster (hook size 2)

Results: 1 whiting, 1 codling

Report: Started fishing from dock walls behind carpet factory. First cast got a small whiting. The whiting was caught on 3/0 hook with carb - the bait was almost bigger than the fish. Quite after that so I switched to a lug/razor cocktail. Got a small codling on the first cast (1 lb 4 oz). No further bites after that. Other anglers along the dock were not having much success either. The guys at the north end of the pier got a coalfish, two guys to the right of me got a small whiting and a pollock. Crabs stealing bait were a problem, hauled one in with my hook held securely in his claw.

At 6.15 pm I moved down to Green Park but nothing happening there either apart from catching another crab. Several other anglers were there and caught nothing, although one guy on the corner caught a skate.

It was very mild which probably kept the cod away. There were evening during last summer that were colder. But I was happy enough - two new species for 2008 - and better than my January fishing.
