LUG
me and the son went out today and dug a large amount of lug, mostly yellow tails but a good load of black lug as well. have them all in salt now. but what i would like to know is, why do people say black lug is the best for bait :? i find that they all work, well to me anyway a lug is a lug. so why do they say black lug is the best :?:

yellow tails and blacks are the same lug just different names black is said to be the best bait because of its tougher skin.

Theres definitly two mabey three species of lug Black lug(arenicola defodiens) and blow lug(arenicola marina) both proven to be seperate speices there is also the yellow tail witch is generally thought to be the same species as the black lug(arenicola defodiens) i personally feel that a yellow tail is a different worm to the other two,,
but the burrow of the black lug and yellowtail and cast are the same in many ways ,,streight down and a curley cast,, and are widespread all around irelands coast if you know where to find them,,
i have found over the years that all the lug we have discussed has its day , even frozen blacks, rotten blow lug ,papered yellow tail to name but a few of the many different variations of using worm as a hook bait,,
i personally prefer fresh medium yellow tails in within the many variations :D :D

another thing is that blow lug can vary in colour greatly from red too green too even black, its horribly confusing

I would be of the view that yellow tails and blacks are not of the same variety. The blacks seem alot thougher, bigger, darker and alot more resiliant than the yellow tails.
Graham those yellow tails I showed you yesterday wrapped in newspaper did not behave themselves once I tried to bait up with them, most of them blew themselves up once removed from the paper. I should of been keeping them in water. I'll know next time.
Anyone know of anyone able to supply freshly gutted black lug. There must be lads getting them in by next day courier from the UK.

John,
as far as ia aware its not proven yet between blacks and yellows, possibly someone in the UK has done more research, but i do agree that they are like chalk and cheese when together, best to keep yellows in water just covering the worms(semi dry)
your best bet on the papered blacks is wales you should ask chris , that where a lot come from,we used to call them slaps ,because they needed throwing / slapping on the sand to make the thicken up before hooking i have a couple of contacts over there might be worth a call
