Shore Caught Tope

#1 Post by Paul B »

Just wondering...With the vast amount of shoaling whiting that seem to be around the East Coast, has anyone here tried for a Tope from the shore ??

I know they are regularly caught around Greystones and Kilcoole but they must be around Wexford as well .

i think there were a few runs had on ennereilly last week

fished in north wexford last night and place was thick with whiting, had 2 snoods bitten off but im assuming that it was due to the teeth of the whiting biting throught the snood as it was only 10lb line

Just wondering, when you do get them off the shore are they far out? or do you get them close in amongst the whiting?

they are nomally close in (try casting a whole mac on a 7/0 hook with 175gm gripper and you will appreciate why)

Only had one in 2007....(about 35-40lb)

2006 had 3 in two sessions.

Normally only fish for them in summer as I go after lunkers of cod come September/October. :D :D

BUT...........having said that......

Was fishing about 4 or 5 weeks ago on a tope renound beach.....Heard a shout .....next thing all I can see is my mate jumping on his rod to try and stop it being dragged into the sea....at speed............HONESTLY........and believe me ...he WAS on all fours or else it WAS GONE.

Floating kelp or driftwood I thought straightaway being the sceptic that I am.

The laughs outtta the other guys when he pulls in a 10cm whiting.....

But its tail was marked and scuffed......

Seal?? Tope?? Huge cod???

We'll never know....but I guess thats what brings us all back to fish another session.

I know what you mean alright.....

Been thinking about trying "Sliding" It's huge in SA. You cast out a lead only, then clip on a bait and slide it out.....

By doing this you can get a whole mackerel out as far as you can cast a lead. Might not be worth doing though, if the Tope are 40 Meters out.

the further you cast the lower the angle between your line and the water, therfore the harder it will be to get the bait to slide any distance.

unless you know of a mark with deep water and cliffs to your back to give you a good angle to slide the bait down it will be very difficult.

FWIW i have tried something simular in the past with the likes of live whiting and coalies and a lead but couldnt get it to slide any distance.

if you picked up a few tips on how its done in SA id love to hear them

you should be able to send half a mackeral 80+ yards with out too much trouble.i use this size bait regurly in the summer for huss and conger with a 6 oz gripper, and with my conoflex enigma and 35lb mainline i can cast it about 80-100yds depending on conditions. what i have noticed it that i use quite a slow cast; i.e very little compression from me but instaead using the weight of the lead and bait compress the rod. you also need a very smooth casting style as any variations in the arc the rod travels through will result in a snapped tip, especially if there is any torsion placed on the rod mid cast (i discovered this from experience  )...
shore species 2008(25):dogfish(3.1lbs), bull huss (12lb 2oz), bass, shore rockling, coalie, whiting, pollack, conger (22.4lbs),flounder, thick lipped mullet (4.8lbs),turbot,ling (11.2lbs),ballan wrasse(4.5lbs), cuckoo wrasse, pouting, poor cod, cod (9.5lbs), dab, 3 bearded rockling, long spined scorpion fish, corkwing wrasse, plaice, trigger fish, sea trout, garfish

Hey Paul,

With practice you can slide the bait the whole way to the lead.... but it does take about 10 mins in idea conditions to get the bait out.... I just know what I've seen in SA, but the next time I see you I will show you what I have seen.....

10 mins    just as well its a big bait cos otherwise by the time you got it out it would be time to bring it back in.

i have seen people using a whole mackeral and using a stopcock froma toilet sistern as a float and weight. think the idea is that it allows the bait to move more naturally or something
