Abu Mag Elite Green!

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Lovely reel Conor. Good weather forecast for tomorrow. Good luck with the casting, just take it easy at first and it should all come together. Don't try and hit the Copeland Island!

Trouble is Conor......

Once you buy your 1st Abu...you will want to buy another one as a back up..

Nice Reels.

very good, but they have no mags mate, the elite is easier to learn on

I know that, but I don't know how to turn on the mags, so I might have been fishing without mags

at the side of the reel there is a slider with numbers on it, 8 being full mags and 1 the least, this lets you change the mag strength depending on the conditions

Put it on 8 Conor to start with.......As you get more used to it you should gradually back them down.

I always fish with mine on 2 and no brake blocks. This way if a head wind gets up I can slow it down.

I need to know, how do you fit the brake blocks anyway?
If possibly could you get a picture?

If you start by removing the three thumb screws from the right hand end plate (am pointing at one with a pen here)

Once they are all loose the whole right side of the reel will come away, the spindle may come away with it or it might stay in place inside the spool - it makes no difference.

The brake blocks go onto the pins I am pointing at with a pen. Once the blocks are in place it is best to keep the reel on it's end while you are replacing the right hand end plate so that the blocks don't slide off the pins.

These instructions are for the older model Abu's like yours and mine. The latest models have six captive plastic brake blocks but the process is much the same.

If you start off with two of the fibre blocks fitted it will make the reel more forgiving while you are learning.

Hope this helps

i have to apologize for the state of the reel, it hast bee cleaned in a while...anyway here you go:

take off the handle side plate on the reel. this is done by loosening the 3 thumbscrews. then you should have this.

now here is a close up of the exposed side of the reel. you see the two little pins? simply slide the blocks onto these pins and put the end plate back on. do this carefully so the blocks don't slip off the pins.

now your ready to go. i personally don't use blocks in abus, i think its overkill to have blocks and mags. i just use mags.
