.....perfect description of a Shakespear UglyStick 15 lb model 1480. You could do an awful lot worse.

All round rod
Hard to beat a Fladen SolidC 10-20lb 8' as a multipurpose rod. I think Henry was doing good deals at one stage.
Tope
Any 12lb class rod is perfect for Tope. 10 oz sounds like a lot of lead for that area. I would have thought 8oz would be enough. Strip down to 20lb class mono and a 12 lb Class rod. The Daiwa Vertice is an excellent rod and won't break the bank. A '12' has plenty of backbone but will allow you to play a tope well. It is really the reel that does the work with Tope but a 12 lb class is perfect in my book. The 20lb class mono will allow you to use less lead. Forget about snap swivels and put on your boom etc. and tie the line directly to your trace swivel. This leaves you with only one knot that can fail. Forsake shock leaders too as i have seen a few tope lost by people using them on Uptiders etc. With Tope you want the minimum to go wrong. 1 knot, 1 boom, 1 bead, 1 weight, no rubbing leader! just eight feet of 200lb mono crimped to a big swivel and a 8/0-10/0 hook. This does not kink like wire and presents bait propperly. Also acts as your rubbing leader. The tope will NOT bite through it. it is far too tough for that. I have been using the same couple of traces for the last few years and though the edges might be a little roughened and battle worn from the topes teeth, they have not failed me yet and i just keep on using the same ones over and over...
