great fishing arthur, tried down here but the wind had strengthened to much, was throwing up a 10+ ft surf by 6 o clock, made it very difficult to fish, this augmented by the horizontal rain. should hopefully fish well next week over the low water tides if the wind dies down
shore species 2008(25):dogfish(3.1lbs), bull huss (12lb 2oz), bass, shore rockling, coalie, whiting, pollack, conger (22.4lbs),flounder, thick lipped mullet (4.8lbs),turbot,ling (11.2lbs),ballan wrasse(4.5lbs), cuckoo wrasse, pouting, poor cod, cod (9.5lbs), dab, 3 bearded rockling, long spined scorpion fish, corkwing wrasse, plaice, trigger fish, sea trout, garfish

stuff;;;
The 3 biggest fish took full razor on 4/0 pennel rigged aberdeens, 15lb snool clear mono.
All 3 were taken on the down hook on a 2 up 1 down trace.(this snool took 5 in total i also missed 2 on same.)
All fish gave slackline bites...( flooding tide).
All taken whitin 50 meters of beach around the 2/3 wave.
Lost 2 fish and missed 2 slackliners :x .
Most fish/bites at dusk.
there was more fish there..........if i had stayed...............tomorrow :) ..

thirty, were are you from ?. the bass fishin slackens of around here from dec. till march.. water temp.?.. they are still some fish about and if you get suitable weather ie. mild, with southerly winds then it can be as good as any other time of yr. which means they are never that far away and must be whitin a few miles of the coast.

Nice fish C. The bigger one definitely looks like a 8/9 pounder. In prime condition. Looks like many a poor crab/whiting etc met a bassy grave.

Bass on the South East Coast

#20 Post by JimH »

This is a sample chart demonstrating the occurrence of bass caught along the Wexford coast as recorded by SEAi over the last five years. These are not number of fish but rather and indication of unit effort for fish caught over time by visiting anglers and the results obtained. These numbers do not reflect quality or size of fish but strictly unit effort of numbers caught and returned during angler fishing times as recorded by SEAi.

The fish that are recorded are caught using only fly and lure – there are no numbers available for bait fishing. The unit effort per catch for fly fishing is considerably greater than that for lure fishing, calculated somewhere in the region of 9 times. This may demonstrate some of the challenges involved in bass fly-fishing.

Interesting comments:

June and July of this year were particularly difficult
September October and November of this year remain very good
July remains consistently high in unit effort/catch in all years mapped
August remains unpredictable over the five years mapped
April of this year was exceptional
May and June are influenced by the closed season
Bass are evident on the Wexford coast from April up to December. The low reading for December is because personal fishing is only recorded in this month. Nevertheless it is very possible.

Water clarity, wave height and direction, rainfall, wind strength and direction, temperature all affect the possibility of catching bass. The predictable influences like tide are easily determined but the above factors are less ‘calculable’. On an open coastline these factors exert even greater influences over fish.

Notes:

The significant noticeable factor in Wexford at the moment is the clarity of water and stability in weather systems. This has ensured us high catches of fish right through October and November. This clarity is probably due to low rainfall and light winds. Salinity and clarity within the estuaries remains high and stable. There is little or no ‘cloudy’ water and any that there is, is clearing usually within 24 hrs. This is one of many reasons why we are still catching bass and other species on fly and lures as early as today.

The approaching weather systems may knock that stability off over the next few days and consequently the bass fishing on fly and lure for Wexford may degenerate this weekend – but I’ve said that a number of times this month.
