Saw this on BBC this morning. Fairly interesting article. I express no opinions - just thought I'd post it up for all to make their own !

Looks like the quotas are not the answer all those fish were dead and dumped what a waste. Surely there must be better methods for fishermen to use to eliminate some of this waste.

Hopefully this waste will find its way back into the foodchain. I don't believe allowing fishermen to land above quota bye catch would help I mean who is to say what was was landed intentionaly. Better fishing methods to allow for more specific targeting would help. Restricting the ammount of fish allowed to be landed does seem to be helping fish stocks.

almost every trawler on the irish coast is doing the same thing, a mate who fishes out of kinsale has dumped as est. 1500 boxes of fish mostly cod in last 2 months 1500x 100s boats, THERE ARE SOME VERY STUPID PPL. IN CHARGE OF OUR FISHERIES.........
What I said in public
"Bass, there future in your hands, support catch and release"
..but I'm a liar really

Discarding fish

#7 Post by Mark »

That is an absolute disgrace. That boat was only targetting prawn so what was it doing dragging a net along the sea bed for. Why can't they use pots? Answer= Because they are too greedy and the soft arse fisheries dept just turn a blind eye to it. We surely now have the technology to fish for a specific species and limit the bycatch. I am a keen shore angler who visits your beautiful and friendly country twice a year. We use to fish this beach for bass and it was our banker spot, pretty much guarantee bass of it and to a good size(15lb the biggest) but then they go and net it right under the frigging noses of a certain establishment promoting itself the --------- -------- bass centre,i could see the nets from the frigging window of this place. Hence to say have found another place to spend my 1000 euro's until that one gets netted out. Rant over just trying to get the point over that a bass that is caught and returned is worth more to ireland than a dead one.Fact.

The Marine Institute's Fisheries Science Services
advises....."Therefore a closure of cod directed fishery is advised
and only fisheries that have negligible catches of cod should be
allowed"

http://www.marine.ie/NR/rdonlyres/E6041 ... n7ek07.pdf

Not sure about the 1500 boxes of cod dumped by 100 boats though in 2
months. 20 boxes to the ton would mean 7,500 tons of cod dumped in 2
months. The total irish quota is only around 800 tons of a total quota
of around 4,700 tons. The document estimates the SSB (2007), Spawning
Stock Biomass, the total weight of all sexually mature fish in the
population, at 5,150 tons, so we cant be dumping more fish then is
there.

The important point from this is that it is silly for lads on this
site to be knocking seven shades of s*** out of each other over rod
and line fishing, which is totally irrelevant. The important issue is
the European Commission proposal for setting of fishing opportunities
in 2008 at 3,260 tons against the Fisheries Science Services advice of
a closure of cod directed fishery

Now one thing is, they use diamond mesh on their nets, but if they used square mesh on the nets they fish actually would have a higher chance of living.
