Over rated casting weight?????
some time ago i had Penn's Anaconda 16 ft.- casting... up to 8 oz. now I'm using Penn's Affinity same 16 ft-casting up to 8 oz... didnt understand how and why they put such a numbers on???? casting of the ground i couldn't use bigger sinker than 125 gr. then i put 150 gr i just couldn't cast it full power i feel that is limit or something bad will happen....125gr - 4 oz went farr enough and 150gr-5 oz half of that distance, same with overhead cast,4 oz + bait was the biggest weight i could use with no worries about the rod...now if i would put 8 oz plain lead. ......Century CM is rated to 7 oz. .. So why its so?? maybe somebody know the reason for this??

you'ld be supprised on what you are casting.. take a 6oz lead that you need to get out into the surf, and using a 2/0 pennel with squis and mack coctail
the overall weight of that rig will be near enough to 8oz..
i heard this years ago " always cast 2oz less the casting weight, because you bait could make up the difference"
it is more safety aspect as paul said, a rod could become unpredictable casting a heavier lead than rated for..

i have cast both 7,8 and 10 oz(plain lead) for my own interests. i found that all my current rods could handle it providing you were sensible. i found my carbon metal can easily cast 7oz + bait.
then and again i have seen some rods with a 4-8oz rating when they clearly cant handle that sort of weight.

Bring it to Youghal in January and I'll give it a go with an 8oz. lead
Casting rates and how far it will go are two different things. I have a Diawa super cast with a cast rate of 4-8oz any weight over 5oz and the rod will collapse under the cast. It will cast 6oz. but I can't get the same distance out of it. Where the Diawa TDXS 133 with a cast rate of 4-8oz this rod is best used witha 6oz lead. Any of these two rods will cast an 8oz. lead but how far it travels is a different thing. When buying rod "it do not do what it says on the box"
it should be named not "bbc" ,would be better to call it "so many blanks,so little time.." :wink:roger de dodger wrote:just stick an eight ounce lead on it and wollop it, bet it wont break , if it does bring it back to the shop where you got it and demand a refund!!go on join the de bbc (debrocks broken blanks club)
