Winter wrasse?

Can you catch wrasse year round ive caught a few recently but was wondering if they disappear for the winter?

good question, often wondered that my self as any wrasse marks i have i don't fish during the winter, too dark and dangerous

I think they more out to Deeper, Warmer water, I'm not too sure mind, I'm sure there are Marks which hold them all year due to Depth and Temp. But I have to say I've never had a Wrasse after December or before April.

Hi,

Yup you can go wrasse fishing pretty much all year round down here. They do seem to move off the rocks out to deeper water if there's a bad storm due or something but besides that they can fish down here all year round

I may be about to make a total pleb of myself but I have always believed (don't necessarilly know why now) that wrasse "slept" during winter in nests that they built.
Is that absolute nonsense? :oops:

Would they be Cuckoo Wrasse :lol: :lol: :lol: sorry blaker.... :) :wink:

I've never caught Wrasse over here, but back in England I caught as many in winter as in summer, if thats any help.

blaker, most wrasse do build mucous casings for sleep at night, its kinda like a sleeping bag of sorts. in my tank, my wrasse does the same, every night and buries himself in the sand. not sure about the whole of winter.

wrasse do move off to deeper water during the winter months they cant hack the cold weather. a server cold snap can kill them.

So nest building and sleep occurs, hibernation doesn't? I'm taking that as a pass mark!

Had a half dozen last Saturday so they are still about at the moment. I suspect that the onset of winter gales/strong winds might play as important a role in driving them of as water temps do

Hello,
There were no shortage of them a couple of years ago when I was fishing for them with my uncle in early November in Clifden area.
My neighbour promised me that he saw wrasse caught as late as Christmas Eve in the past. I tried in early Jan with zero success.

My Grandad always said that there was no point fishing for gunner (wrasse) until the yellow flower appeared on the flagger (wild iris), which in Connemara is around April.

Hope I can try for them in the next few weeks

First good cold North Westerly will see them off.
