People: Myself and Rolly

Duration: 16:00 - 20:00

Tide: low at 17:00

Weather: chilly SSE initially about 20kph then v calm in darkness

Bait:refrozen lug, mack and sandeel

Rigs: single hook pat, pulley for 5 mins then 2 hook flappers

Results: 3 flounder, 2 plaice

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report: As usual the reports were of suicidal bass down in clare, so off I headed for about the 20th time this season to collect my undeserved bass.

Not so. Knowing the tide was as near as low tide and being warned about the ropey currents, I wasn’t expecting too much.

I planned to have one rod out in a ball of lug and another in a few inches for flats. Rolly on the otherhand was full of confidence and as usual totally unprepared.

Was talking of fishing the reef – but had only 1, yes 1 spinner with him! So decided to join me on the beach proper.

I casted short with the first rod as Rolly banged out his first cast, the current caught his lead it shot to the left (near the reef) stripped the reel and before he realised it snapped the line off – the lot gone!

We had no extra spool or line for him – so I had to forget about my two rod option and handed him my rod for a bit of distance – I suggested try right this time!!!

Dutifully he cast right…. And again the line flew – this time he caught it and salvaged about 50 metres max! before the line was snagged and had to be pulled for a break.

With that we were both scratching in the surf – except rolly lost interest algogether  – we debated moving on and I suggested wait for the twilight and I fished the two rods.

The scenery was great and as usual its great to get out of the house :D

As the tide had turned and was filling the reef itself was less likely to come into play or the weed from it

About an hour later, no bites no action pretty dead but then as it was almost dark – a double shot of flounder – 17 and 23cm, to lug tipped with mack :D

Rolly then decided to look at his rod – stuck on half a sandeel third cast nice rattle and a plaice of 27cm

All of a sudden this scratching wasn’t so bad, giving it his full attention – a natural tip worshipper was born!

Few casts later he had a nice flounder of 28cm on mack alone

Then on my last cast I got another plaice of 28cm on lug again tipped with mack

Was wrecked after four hours and made a break for home – no bass but good craic – perseverance pays!

 :D

Hey,

you love fishing low water up there!

I'm now firmly convinced that its the last few hours of the flood and the first hour on the turn that are the most productive in clare.

on those stretch of beaches it seems to be the case alright

there doesnt seem to be much potential for food to be thrown up from the bottom as its filling to full tide from that heavier grained sand - well thats my theory anyway
