7ht power handle

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

thats what i thought it was, however when i asked in southside about it i was told that the handles werent interchangeable cos of diameters in the drive shaft or something. i took his word on it cos the guy usually knows what he is talking about

the only part that isnt interchangeable is the small cap/piece that keeps the nut securing the handle in place. ie if you were to put the abu handle on you you would have to put the abu piece on as the daiwa cap wouldnt fit.

a bit confusing but i hope you understand

so where would i get the likes of that alex. have you done it as you seem to know what your talking about.

also heard that the extra cranking action puts extra pressure on the internal workings of the reel. is that true

usually the same place you get the handle from
all it does is stop the nut at tthe top from opening by its self.

ah yes i know what your talking about now. anyone know of any good tackle shops that sell those handles and the little collar part on the cheap. Southside for some reason seem relatively reluctant to get it in

i imagine it would put a bit more strain on the reel, but those reels are tough, just ask steve. i believe he even once used his for rock fishing

Abu, Daiwa and Shimano handles can all interchange for the sake of a couple of small files, a 3/16th round file and a small flat file is all thats needed to get the handle to fit the shaft.....as to wear on the gears, IMHO its hardly enough to notice as the gears will only come under pressure if there is a great weight on the end....if your heaving fish in that big who cares about the cogs anyways

Martin,

By the time that reel hits the shops the price will be around the £150 mark, the likes of Gerry's and Veals may even do it cheaper.

did a search on ebay for an abu handle and asked the seller (a uk tackle store) if the handle was compatible for the 7ht. this is what i got back.....:

"The handle will fit the 7HT, but you will either have to put a chrome ABU nut and nut plate on the handle or modify the Daiwa nut cover"

Paul,

If you take both handles and line them up together back to back, you can see how much needs to be filed out to get it to fit. Then you only need to put the keeper nut back on with the location washer (to stop it comeing undone)

I will try to find time later and take a couple of photos....I have loads of different handles    some that never even went on sale  Handles turn me on   sad I know

for the record, no filing needs to be done but you will need the abu nut, used it over the weekend and not a bother on it, fantastic bit of kit
