Hook Sizes

#1 Post by round_ourway »

Just trying to get a general view of what hook sizes you use for the different species. I know its very dependent on the size of bait being used, here goes

Round Fish

Cod - 1/0 & 2/0

Bass - 3/0

Pollock - 1/0

Ballan wrasse - 1/0 & 2/0

Corkwing wrasse & others - size 1

coalfish - 1/0

gunard - 2/0

Dogfish - 2/0

Mackerel - 2&4

rockling - 2

whiting - 2

Flatfish

Flounder - size 2 & 4 sometimes size 6

Plaice - size 2 & 4

Turbot - Size 1&2

Dab - Size 2 & 4

Rays - 3/0

scratching in a competition for flats, coalies, codling, whiting etc: size 2,4,6,8 (have had specimen bass on size 4 hook)

otherwise i genetally tend not to go bigger than 2/0, obvious exception in conger.

small hooks = big and small fish

big hook = no fish

Caught a few dogfish last year on a size 16 hook. I use one above the main hook to hold the bait in place and stop it from sliding down the shank of the main hook...
