hooks in airport hand luggage?
going back to clare for the weekend, usually the missus has checked in baggage where i throw in any fishing gear that might be dodgy, but this time she doesn't and I have a new rig wallet stuffed with pre-tied rigs, i checked the heathrow website and there is no mention of "hooks" being a prohibited item.
Anyone ever taken these through security?
cheers

Re hooks in hand luggage
As far as I know carrying anything with a hook in it is a non starter, could be used as a weapon apparently, you might well find your rigs being confiscated from your hand luggage and thats after they give you major lectures etc,you might be able to bring the rigs witout hooks and attach them later.Returning from the states recently the guy in the tackle shop in NY warned me not to have any hooks in the hand luggage,it would be a shame to have your stuff taken.

I agree, particularly as there are being sure @rseholes these days about everything, but if their own info on the website doesn't say "don't take a hook" then i'm tempted to chance it.
I've yet to hear of a plane being hijacked with a 3 hook flapper. (then again i've yet to hear of a plane being hijacked with 110ml of shaving cream)
i think i'll throw in the few pennel rigs i want to use and see what kicks off.
Corby: you fishing down between ballyvaughan to kilrush this weekend? I'll drop you a pm with my number in case, but not fishing the ebb in fanore again :-)

yea but its really chance whether they bother to stop you or not
to be honest your pen could kill someone quicker than a size 1 hook
and you can start a fire in the jacks with your lighter - but they dont disallow those
dont get me wrong - if the rigs are precious dont chance it - but at the end of the day - those checks are pure lipservice
ive had plenty of stuff through the scanners that i had forgotten was on me that shouldnt have been there
its pure chance

the last time i went catfishing in spain, which was after 9/11 i brought some huge 10/0 longshanks and 6/0 trebles in my hand luggage, security looked through my bag. saw them and said "where are you going fishing?"... "the ebro" i said. "cool" and handed my bag back
dont think they are covered by specifically policy but you might get a picky one. they do say "no sharp items" so it might be best not to risk it.

naw since 9/11 they are very tight on security especially the likes of heathrow, id take the rig wallet out completely, as i know a guy who was maid to strip five reels of line cause the security guard said that the line could be used as a restraint, so could shoe laces or a belt! so they might say the same about the traces without the hooks better to be safe than sorry.
