Weird Bass Roe

Hi everyone,
I caught a bass last night and I kept it for the table. When I was gutting it I noticed something unusual. The roe's were really big, each one was about the size of a bic lighter, they were also very dark brown in color and hard to the touch. I cut one in half and it resembled chorizo sausage in texture and color. Apart from that the fish was in really good condition and tasted fine. Has anyone ever seen this before? or can anyone give an explanation?.
