Razorfish

Hey folks,
I'm just wondering ha anyone any info on using rasorfish for bait? preparation, presentation - that kind of thing.

Bob Moss demonstrated presentating it at the angling show a while back. It's a bit like putting snot on the hook!

Separate the razor from the shell. You'll probably want to cut it to get two or three baits, depending on hook size. Then, starting at one end of the bait, keep piercing the hook through from one side to the other and back again, as if you were sewing it up. Once that's done, wrap fine elastic around it until you have something sausage-like that will stay in the hook.

Something which I do with a lot of baits, razor included is to cut a frozen squid open, clear out the insides of it, take out the feather if you're bothered, then lay the razor (whatever) inside the opened squid tube. If you can get the head mounted on the squid again, then go for it, the eyes will be a good attractant. Close the tube over and elasticate it a good bit, mount it on a pennel rig and then elasticate again.
Squid is easy to mount because of its toughness, a lot of other baits can benefit from the protection it offers.
The other way is just as described above, except I would use a whole razor mounted on a pennel, the lashed on with bait elastic.

i have used razor quit a bit over the last few months and seriouslly think its just a waste of money, i have had very limited success on it and only seem to catch when its on a cocktail.

I think myself Razor is one of the most underated baits out there. Off the top of my head, I have had loads of bass on it, Codling, Coalies, Whiting, Flounder, Dogfish, Ray, Plaice and Dabs. Indeed, its the only bait I use on one of my local beaches for bass, it works brilliantly. As a big bait for cod, I use it in a cocktail with one full razor and 2 black lug, folded over and tied into a convenient sausage shape before cutting in half and lashing onto the hook. For general use for bass and the like, I find either a full razor mounted on a pennell rig and tied on or a half on a single hook is enough. Deadly in the surf.... Only thing about it I dont like is the smell can take several days to get off your hands and woe betide you if a pack leaks in your car.... :x

I have tried to get razor fish with salt on spring tides and have failed to find any. I do however have a spot were I dig common piddocks which have proven to be a brilliant bait for gilt head bream. I bind them to the hook with tons of elastic and they are tough enough to withstand the rigours of casting and sometimes the same bait can catch several fish before being totally destroyed.

was out getting a few last night once you find a spot its easy ,its finding a spot that takes the time (thanks debrock for your infinite wisdom :shock: )

They look very like clams to me and I know where I can dig some so I might give them a go...anyone have experince using clams as bait ?

probably the most underrated bait out there, a good tip would be to keep freezing/unfreezing the razor, makes them extra smelly and ive had the bass on them to prove they love it

I have used clams as bait a few times. They are a great bait if you can find them. I know a place where you can walk over a mud flats at low tide looking for their breathing holes, it takes a keen eye to spot them but once you know what to look for its easy enough. They are quite large and a whole clam is a fabulous bass bait. They are also pretty good to eat. I saw a documentary recently that told how the cosmetic industry use piddocks to test the effectiveness of skin products that block free radicals(apparently these cause the skin to deteriorate). So not just a good bait.

Have used clams and razors on occassion as bait, but no significant results from them, just a few more doggies.

Never seen or heard of a piddock, will keep my eyes peeled now.

Have had a few razor down in kerry, kept a few for bait but they make a better snack :-)
