Big Ray?

#1 Post by shoalar »

Hi all,

I was fishing yesterday on a sandbank in kerry in about 130 foot of water, the spot is good for pollock and cod but we only usualy fish with feathers and stuff there. Yesterday I tried a bit of makerel on a one hook rig in the hopes of getting a flattie or something. Fairly quickly the rod tip started moving buit it was a small enough bite. I began to reel in and it was heavy enough when all of a sudden the rod just bent double and i couldn't shift it. I let out a good bit of line but it was so strong it swung the nose of the boat and seemed to anchor it. It felt for all the world as though it was stuck in the bottom but its just sand bottom and we've fished there for years and never gotten stuck. It was by far the strongest fish ive ever had on and after about 15 minutes the line went slack and the rig came up with the mackerel gone. I was thinking it might have been a pretty big ray as i've heard that if u let them stick to the bottom they're very hard to get off. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks very much and sorry if that was a bit hard to follow :D

If you're picking up Pollack on that spot then I would suggest there may be patches of broken ground there also and you may have snagged on one of those.... Don't mean to piss on your cornflakes BTW, I hope it was a fish.
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial :D

could have been a skate, or an old net, or lost bit or warp, or a lost pot, or the bottom.

could even a very big ray do what you described? i wouldnt think so, if it was a fish i would guess skate. but equally could have been a snag
