What type of Anchor?

#1 Post by marshpike »

I'm flooding this forum with questions but you've be a wealth of knowledge so far.

I have a 13ft Dory and have started to fish it regular in Carlingford lough, when I fish around the mouth I'm finding my anchor's lifting due to the strength of the tide. What type/size of anchor would suit me best in this type of situation, thank you in advance for any help.

What size/type are you currently using? Have you enough chain attached to the anchor and are you letting out enough warp for the depth of water you're anchoring in?

I've plenty of chain, its more of a weight than an anchor I'm using.

I have a small grapple type but its way to small to be any use, fishing in about 40 ft of water.

40 feet of water should equate with 120 feet of warp let out. 3:1 ratio. Try it with your grapple anchor.

I didn't realise that you would need so much line out, I'll give it a shot.

Trip.... Attach anchor via shackle to the bottom eye, cable tie chain to top eye. When you go to haul it in, you will break the cable tie and lift the anchor from the bottom up. Cuts down on the hauling and grunting if you get into a snag.

Anchor

Picture....thousand words...etc...etc :D

This style of anchor or a bruce or delta will hold you in all types of ground if there is enough chain attached. When rigged to trip you stand less of a chance of loosing it, especially of you have the HP to break the ties.

There's descriptions of the popular types here: http://www.sailtrain.co.uk/anchoring/anchors.htm

how heavy a gauge tie is breakable by hand when hauling but strong enough to hold in tide? i have a one cm wide one would that do the job (never actually had to break it yet) on a 5kg anchor and 17 foot boat?

Forget cable ties!! Use some builders line or this braid stuff you all use on your reels. Experiment with the amount of turns used to tie the chain to find the most suitable for your boat and anchor  .

A 1cm wide cable tie is a beast Adam..... I think you would have serious problems trying to trip the anchor..... :? I would start weaker and work your way up to what works best for you.

Cable ties

#14 Post by bigkev »

Hi Adam
I use a 2.5kg bruce with a slightly longer chain
I use 2 of the very smallest cable ties. Ask MAC, one day on the shannon we couldnt even break those by hand
This set up holds my 16 foot boat in strong tides without any problems

Easiest way to retrieve your anchor is the ankayanka.
You could make one easy enough i'd say.
Clip it onto your rope.
Pull the rope to the side of the boat.
Drive away from the bouy at a 30degree angle. (someone needs to make sure the rope is away from the engine).
Next thing you know you Anchor is hooked to the bottom of the bouy.
Retrieve as normal with no sweat involved. 8)
