East Cork Rock Mark, 13/08

#1 Post by Pat »

People:Me

Duration:5:15am - 7:15am

Tide:HT 6:32am

Weather:Clear skies, very gentle SW

Bait:N/A

Rigs:Plugs & Spinners

Results:1 Bass, several mackeral

Catch and Release:: Yes (Bass)/No (Mackeral)

Report:After work Sunday night headed straight down to a rock mark. Weather wise conditions were perfect with virtually a flat calm sea. As a consequence the clarity of the water was crystal clear. However, as it was still twilight that didn't worry me. I started up with a silver kilty lure and was soon into mackeral. Shortly after I switched to a 20g silver toby and started to land mackeral on this too. As it neared dawn-break another intrepid angler appeared and took up station on the rocks across the small bay. This is a first! I've never seen anyone else this early before. If you're a forum user, how did you get on? As there was probably no chance that the bass may beat the mackeral to the spinners and, as the bass may actually being feeding on the macks, I changed over to a Green Mackeral Rebel. Just after one or two casts a seal popped up just to the left of where my plug landed. Frightened the bejasus out of me! In a tired stupor I thought it was a diver first. Well this is a first! I've never come across a seal in this particular spot before. Well that's probably put paid to me bass session I thought. I carried on though, as it was just a beautiful morning to be out - hoping that the seal wouldn't take a fancy to my lure. Then, a few casts later, my lure was hit - and this was a fish. A bit more substantial than a mackeral and I could tell by its kiting runs that it was a bass. Safely landed and weighed in at 2.5lbs it was duly returned. Almost on cue the sun broke the surface of the horizon and with that I caught no more fish for the rest of the session - almost like someone turned the lights off (or on)!
